The Effects of an Earthquake

By Keisuke Nakagawa

The impact of an earthquake is very serious for our life. Whenever earthquakes occur, we suffer from the damage. The damage affects economy, social organization, and nature. In this essay, I’m going to talk about the effects.

First, an earthquake gives us economic effects. Of course, the earthquake can break buildings. Therefore, offices and factories would be destroyed. If so, economic activities of the firm must be stopped. Such problems will be one more. The problems will come at the time of coming of an earthquake. It will affect not only each company but also the national economy. The efficiency of the national economy will get worse. An earthquake can destroy the economic activities.

The second effect is for social organization. The cruelest trouble is death of people. Every time a strong earthquake comes, many people are killed. Not to mention, that brings intense sorrow for survivors. Reduction of victims is a challenge for the nations. The worst situation is the outbreak in the biggest city. The victims will be more. And the headquarters of the nation will get damaged too. The collapse of the core will bring stronger chaos for the disaster area, because rescue and aid won’t work properly.

The third is effects for nature. An earthquake makes bad problems for the environment. The soil will be cracked. It causes landslides and liquefaction. The landslides are seen in forests and mountains. Sometimes, fallen trees and sand block the road and the railways. On the other hand, liquefaction is seen at coasts. Because of that, the land subsidence also occurs.

These impacts are very horrible for us. It is difficult to escape from the effects. However, we have to strive to reduce the damage. To keep our peaceful life, we need to find the way.

The Benefits of Learning English

By Gayane Ambaryan

From the ancient times people of different cultures tried to communicate with each other. That’s why they studied new languages. At present English is becoming the global language and many people around the world study it. According to statistics, more than one billion people speak English now. There are a lot of benefits of studying it: communication with people, getting a good job, and maybe traveling to different countries and learning more about them.

The first benefit of learning English is communication. People always try to find ways to communicate with each other. Learning English is a good way to communicate with people, because English is a language of international communication and many people around the world speak English. So, knowlege of English helps people feel more comfortable, especially now when English is becoming the global language and every year more and more people are studying it.

The second advantage of learning English is getting a good employment. Studying language helps to reach the goal to get a good job. It also can open new opportunities in our career. If we are looking for a prospective and interesting job, learning English is a good idea. After we get a job we can share our experience with other people, to get more knowledge in our area of expertise, and advance in our career.

The last benefit of learning English is traveling and learning. If we are planning to travel, visit different countries, and learn more about them, first of all, we have to learn English. It helps get more information about different cultures, and make new friends from other countries. One of the advantages of learning English is that we will be able to discover the world.

In conclusion, English has become the language of international communication. There are, of course, lots of advantages of learning it: communication with people, getting employment, traveling and learning. More and more people around the world are learning English every year. Knowledge of English helps us to become an international person, to feel more comfortable and maybe to get all these benefits.

A Trip to West Edmonton Mall

By Gayane

A few weeks ago I was in Edmonton with my husband and two kids. The weather was so nice and we decided to drive. It’s about a seven-hour drive from Fort St. John to Edmonton.

The first day, we went to West Edmonton Mall and spent maybe about 6 hours in Galaxyland, the largest indoor amusement park in the world. There are so many rides and attractions that my kids were excited. They like it very much. They played and rode all day and didn’t want to go from there.

The next day we went to West Edmonton Mall’s Waterpark. We were surprised with my husband that it was really big. I have never seen a waterpark like that before. I think it’s the largest one. There are different water slides for adults and children.
We had lots of fun there, and I hope we will go there soon.

Differences Between My Home and Canada

Pamela writes: I asked the students to write about some of the differences they've noticed between their own home and culture and what they've seen so far of Canadian homes and customs. Most of the students have been here only for a few weeks--since the beginning of September.

Yui

When I came to Canada, I saw huge lands. It was cool in Canada, so I felt good. I was surprised that Canadians eat moose because Japanese people don’t eat it. Whenever it is cold, Canadian wear scanty clothing. If Canadians wear scanty clothing, Japanese wear much clothing, so I think Japanese are extremely sensitive to the cold. Canadian don’t take a bath every day, that surprised me. It’s usual for Japanese to take a bath every day.

Reika

When I moved to Canada from Japan, I’m surprised at many things. If Japanese go shopping, Japanese certainly lock the door, but Canadians don’t lock the door. I also always take a bath in Japan, but Canadians take a shower. Besides, it’s a short time for the shower.

I noticed food and times for eating. Canadians eat dinner very early and just a main dish. When I was in Japan, I often ate dinner at 8 p.m., and I have many foods, such as vegetable, fish, and main dish.

Ai

I had many surprising things after I came to Canada. There are a lot of differencesand cultures about foods, life style, habits and shipping and so on between Japan and Canada.

First, about foods. In Canada, they eat only one dish at supper and sometimes bread with it. That’s all. I was really surprised. Also, they sometimes eat some sweets like pudding and cookies for lunch. I feel Canadian people eat all day. These things are very surprising things for me.

Second, life style and habits. My host family never take off their shoes at house. In Japan, we take our shoes off all the time. And they drink only water from a tap. I think Canadian water is more safe than Japanese water. Additionally, they hardly watch TV. They don’t have a TV.

Third, shopping. They were drinking cola before buying. It was really surprising for me. The other day at the supermarket, I noticed a big difference. Canadian people take a shopping cart and put many things they will buy in it. Then they put all things on the counter and pay for them.

Differences from Japan and Canada – Yumi

When I came to Canada, I found some differences from Japan and Canada. First a jmajor difference is supper time. In Japan, supper time is about 7 p.m., but in Canada, we have supper at 5:30 p.m. I was surprised.

Next, Canadian people go to bed early. Everyone goes to bed about 9 p.m. I always go to bed about 12 a.m.

Then Canadian people bring snack (for example, cookies, pudding and so on) for lunch. Also Canadian people drink a cup of juice at supper. Japanese drink water or tea.

Next, at the supermarket, things are bigger than in Japan. For example, when I want a PET bottle, I can buy a PET bottle in Japan. But in Canada, I must buy a six-bottle set. There are many differences from Japan to Canada.

Sanae

There are a lot of different customs between Japan and Canada. First, Japanese always eat rice and some dishes, but Canadians usually eat a potato or bread and one dish. I was also surprised about clothes. In summer time, some Canadians wear only a bathing suit. Some men were naked to the waist. In addition, Canadian houses have small gardens which are like a farm.

However, we also have a similar custom. For example, we always worry about family or friends.

Yoko

I was surprised by many differences between Japan and Canada. First, in Japan, I take a bath in a bath tub every day, but my host family’s house doesn’t have bathtub. I’m sad, and I’m very cold. Second, there are differences of foods. Although Japanese eat rice every day, Canadians don’t eat rice, mainly they eat bread. I sometimes feel to eat rice.

Third, I find some differences at supermarket. In Japan, we had a basket to cashier, but in Canada, we must put goods on conveyor. I feel Canada’s good, for example, bread, ice cream, joice and so on, are so big compared to Japanese ones.
Fourth, many Japanese stay up to midnight, but many Canadians sleep very early.
Finally, I think there are m any differences of climate. In Japan, it is moist and hot. In Canada, it is dry and very cold. I worry this weather. I like nature, but my hometown doesn’t have it. Fort St. John has a lot of nature. I like it here.

Different Culture – Hitomi

Before I came to Canada, I thought that there are some differences between Canada and Japan, but there are more differences than I thought. I will tell you four things that I noticed.

First, Canadian people eat supper at 5 or 6 o’clock. Japanese people eat supper at 7 or 8 o’clock because some Japanese work until night. So I feel a little discomfort about supper time.

Next, Japanese people take a bath almost every day but Canadians, for example, my host family often only take a shower. I like taking a bath so I want to take a bath!

Third, I was surprised when I went to the supermarket. A clerk and a guest often talk a lot in Canada. If I talk with a clerk in Japan, other guests maybe become angry.

Finally, in Canada, a bus is usually late. I take a bus every day and the bus is always late! In inconceivable so I was very surprised.

There are many amazing differences but I enjoy Canadian life.

Vincent

When I moved to Canada from Macao, I experienced and enderwent many differences because two places have too many customs that are different. First, a major difference is the language. I’m not able to speak Cantonese or Chinese wherever I go. At the first time, I was so confused that I’ve never seen too many English words on billboards, sign boards, ads and anywhere.

Second, I saw too many individuals, stylish dudes who were walking on the street. I was surprised at a guy with punk hair but he still can go to school and kids don’t have to wear school uniforms. Then, now I comprehend how uncomfortable it is to take a bus and also how unbearable to tolerate the inclement climate.

Ryuka

When I came toFort St. John from Japan, there are many differences! First, it is early for me to eat and sleep. In Japan, I eat supper at 10 p.m. and sleep at 1 a.m. because I work till 9 p.m. Second, In Japan, I take a bath every day but Canadian people don’t do that. Third, at the supermarket, people don’t pay goods first although they take and eat first!!! It is unbelievable for me!!!!! That’s why there are many differences between Canada and Japan.

Hideki

When I move from Japan to Canada, these counties are very far so I’m having a different culture. At first, Canadian people greet everybody even though almost all Japanese people greet only friends.

Also, foods are very different. Before I came to Canada, I ate mainly rice, but Canadian people are eating bread. Usually Canadian houses hafve a pick-up truck or camping car. Japanese have not too much space. Almost all Japanese cannot get a big car. Therefore, compacts are popular in Japan.

Variety is the Spice of Life

By Sanae Fukuda

I agree with “Variety is the spice of life” because I think that we should experience many things. Even bad things. My life spice is to study abroad. If I only study in Japan, it won’t be too hard for me. However, I also won’t experience great things. There are many great experience for me since I came to Canada. These experiences are not only good but also bad. For example, I could make friends from other countries, and they teach me their own country customs or cultures. Therefore, I could broaden my horizons and gain a lot of knowledge. On the other hand, I would like to go back to Japan some time because I feel homesick. However, after one year, this experience will help my life in the future. I hope so.

Visiting the Philippines

By Hae Sung

I traveled to the Philippines two times. The first time, I traveled to Ce-Bu two years ago with my family. We did the tour for four days. However, we had a lot of entertainment like boating, eating sea food, and scuba diving. The second time, I went to the Bagio with my brother. I thought I would saty two months; nevertheyless, I stayed three months. I visited the Mounseview which we can see the view and I surfed with my friends.

After two months, my brother left; however, my parents came to the Philippines for a trip. We traveled by renting a car and we went around some cities. Although we spent most time in the car, we really enjoyed the trip. I think most times were interesting to me. In addition, those are all good memories. Someday I want to go to the Philippines again.

My First Overseas Trip

By Carrie Yun

When I was 13 years old, for two weeks I visited Charatting in Malaysia with my aunt's family. Even though my father and mother didn't go, I didn't feel lonely. We didn't need to look for travel such as a hotel, information of the city and flight tickets because we pre-arranged in Club Med. We flew for nine hours from Incheon in Korea to Kuala Lumpur with Air Malaysia.

Most Malaysians believe Islam, so many women were wearing the veil like a nun. It's hard to differentiate between girls and women.

The weather was not too hot but somewhat humid. I played volleyball on the beach. For this reason I got sunburn on my shoulders. In addition, when I played scuba diving, I was bitten by a jellyfish. As a matter of fact, I had to stay in my bed for two days. It was very painful, but I felt happy.

At night, we usually had a party with other visitors. We also enjoyed recreation and campfire. The food was fantastic, so I didn't need to put Korean sauce on food. Mative people were very kind even though I used my body language and little English.

When it was time to go home, I wanted to go back quickly because I was really tired and missed my family. It was a little bit painful, hot, and tiring, but I still remember those days very clearly.

A Friend

By Stephen Wang

There is a friend whom I have known since 1974. He has many hobbies which I liked very much. We played together and enjoyed our hobbies. We often launched a beautiful model plane which was assembled by us. He and I put on the different parts of the plane and finally put them together. It was the nicest thing in my childhood.

I haven't seen him since 1995 after he went to America. But we still keep in touch by e-mail. Every New Year's Day and Christmas, we send e-mail and pictures to each other to share the happiness. Maybe one day when we have enough time or after retirement, we can visit each other and play something which we played in childhood.

My Trip to Indonesia

By Sanae Fukuda

I have been to Indonesia two years ago. Before I went there, I worried about my English. However, some Indonesians can speak Japanese. I was surprised and felt lucky.

I enjoyed shopping, sightseeing, and activities. I really enjoyed my trip, but someone had stolen my friend's money. Therefore, we went to the police office and we explained that happening. We explained in Japanese, but the policeman couldn't understand Japanese. We could not do other than speak English. I know that my English is too bad. Therefore, I thought then, I have to study English.

After I can speak English well, I will go to many overseas countries and enjoy my trip. If I have an accident again, I can tell the policeman . . . maybe . . . I hope so.

A Trip to Dalian, China

By Stephen Wang

In 2006, I took a trip to the famous city, Dalian, in China, with my family. We traveled by sea. This was the first time I traveled by sea. Although I felt a little mausea, it was very interesting.

In Dalian, we saw a famous war field and a sea creature museum. We ate a lot of sea food; however, it gave me allergies.

There were many vendors who sold their souvenirs on the sea shore. We bought many souvenirs even though they were a little bit expensive.

After the trip, we went home by train. It took a long time by train; however, it was very cheap.

Book Review - Le Papillon des Etoiles

By Hae Sung Park

The best book I ever read was Le Papillon Des Etoiles. The author is Bernard Werber who is a famous French writer of science fiction. I like his writing style. I connect the end of the story with the Bible, because not only do the main characters have the same names as in the Bible, but also the result has a similar situation.

I love that the author has an original mind. I thought, “How can he make a story like that?” When I read the book I can think of our future. We can really make a garden in an airtight place and when earth is destroyed, we can go somewhere. I think these things are in the near future.

In the story, Elizabeth Mallory was a world yacht champion navigator but she cannot do the navigation anymore because of an accident. The accident driver is Eve Kramer who is an executive officer of aerospace. This accident changed him. He quit his job and studied his father`s project. Meanwhile, he met a rich man who is Gabriel Meg Namara. He assisted Eve materially. They found two people who help them. One person was Elizabeth, Eve’s secretary. He asked her if she can work spacecraft. Finally she attended to the project. They got some problems while this project was finished. Nevertheless, they left to space. Contrary to the beginning, just three people survived. But two people can go to earth. One of these people was killed by a snake. The other one reproduced to make another person.

The First Snow

By Brian Wu

When I see the first snowing every year, it reminds me of my first lover. In 2002, I met her. My friend introduced me. We went together for eight months. That time was so happy for me.

That winter I had to go to the army. It is a duty; no Korean man can avoid that. Almost all couples break up because of many reasons. Many girls between 21 and 23 cannot meet boys of the same age friends and boyfriends because the boys must go to the army. So, many girls feel so lonely and find another boyfriend.

I did not believe that but I prepared that we would possibly break up. I made an appointment that if we were breaking up, we would meet at her university
bench when it was snowing.

Finally, we broke up in the summer of 2003 but I could not do anything for her.
When the first snow came, I could not go there. It is a common appointment for couples, but sometimes the first snow reminds me of that time.

Webaholic

By Jaisung Yoon

The Internet offers access to vast amounts of information and is an important tool for many of us in our everyday lives. However, it also offers bad influences to many people. They waste time on the Internet or get bad information from there. Some serious people don’t move and are on the Internet the whole day. Sometimes they lose their sociality so that they can’t adjust themselves to their everyday life; in addition, they lose friends and health. The variety of activities to improve their growing up disappears because of the Internet. We can’t imagine how many things they will lose in their life. The three most commonly proposed solutions to this serious problem are making a plan for using the computer, having good hobbies, and saying and sharing your Internet addiction with people addicted to the Internet.

In the first solution, people addicted to the Internet make a plan for using the Internet. For instance, when they have spare time or even when they are working, studying, they try to work on the Internet, checking e-mail, managing their blogs, and playing Internet games. They seem likely not to control themselves from Internet addiction. Let them make a plan for using the Internet. They need to consider some things before making the plan: ‘Why do I use the Internet?’, ‘How long will I use the Internet?’, and ‘Don’t I have an alternative way instead of the Internet?’. Then they make a plan to temper overusing the Internet. This will help them.

Another solution to Internet addiction is to have good hobbies: exercise, reading, walking, and hanging around with friends. Somebody said, the Internet also is a hobby. That’s the truth; however, overusing the Internet is not. They need a right hobby to reduce their using the Internet more and more. Then finally they can get back their sociality and everyday life. Moreover, by having a good hobby, they can get new experiences or friends to help in their life.

The last solution, then, is to talk and share their problem in an addiction support group. If they want to fix their problem, they need to know that first. Meeting same kinds of people is the best way to know that. In a webaholic support group, you can say and share your problem with group mates. They could know what is good or bad for them; as well, they can give solutions to each other. In addition, they can comfort each other.

Even though overusing Internet has many bad influences, we can’t escape completely from the use of the Internet. So, we should use the Internet effectively and carefully. It is clear that for us to have vast amounts information and fun, it will be necessary to encourage each other not to be slaves to the Internet. We should make a habit of using the Internet wisely.

My Father

By Jaisung Yoon

I think my father is a person who has had a significant influence on me. Even though I can’t remember when I have grasped his hand or hugged him, I can feel he always takes care of me. He is a typical Korean father, like strict, gruff, and unfriendly to his children. So sometimes I was envious of the kind fathers. However, with growing older, I have been able to realize that he gives me many kinds of love.

You can’t believe how much trust he gives me. I am sure I am still not such a good son. Especially before I came to Canada, I just enjoyed drinking or playing with my friends everyday. No dream, no study, and no future. I thought if I have fun today, it is okay, that is it. Whenever I did something like that, his face did not show any sign of disappointment. One day, before I came here, I got a chance to talk with him. It was uncomfortable because I was unused to talking with him especially about my future. At that time, he said, “I don’t know if you are on hte right way now. But I trust you will be there someday.” I was impressed by what he said and that was what made me change to be different.

My father is a seriously busy enterpriser and sometimes he seems to think about something the whole day. In fact I didn’t understand why he is serious all the time. With advancing years, I would be able to understand about why he does that because he feels his responsibility for his business and family. Thus he tries to think about everything deeply and wisely and his thinking is enough to affect my life. Now I know to think and consider carefully is important. I make my effort to follow my father’s good behaviors.

If somebody asks me, “Who is a person who has had a significant influence on you?“ I do not hesitate to answer, “My father.” Until I die, I will remember that he has given me many good lessons. I hope I will be a father like him and give my children good lessons.

Shepherd Boys with Dogs Fighting - My Opinion

By Viviana Rodriguez

Looking at Thomas Gainsborough's art work, Shepherd Boys with Dogs Fighting, two different feelings possessed me. The first one is a feeling of uncertainty and, perhaps, anger against the boy who is stopping the other boy from stopping the dogs fighting. The other feeling is a feeling of helplessness when looking at the boy who is trying to stop the dogs. The expressions on the boys' faces make me think that the first boy is enjoying the dogs' fight and that maybe he feels some kind of pleasure while watching, whereas the second boy's face gives the feeling of suffering for not being able to stop the dogs.

The more I look at the painting, the more I discover details that lead me to relate the painting to evil and good, for instance, the use of the color tones. The boy that is stopping the other boy and the dog that is on top of the other dog, both are painted with dark colors, while the other boy and the dog that seems to be losing the fight are shown with bright colors. In my opinion, the painter did associate evil with the dark colors and good with brighter colors, which in one way could mean that evil is winning against good, between the dogs, as well as between the boys.

It is also easy to relate this painting with a religios subject because it is common to find passages in the Christian Bible that refer to the shepherd and sheep theme. One of the multiple interpretations I could give to this painting is that both the shepherds and the dogs, which are the ones that protect the sheep from the wolf, are fighting bewteen themselves instead of working together to protect the sheep from the wolf. So who is going to take care of the sheep if there are not any guardians?

I think this is a great piece of art, as it presents a well done oil painting technique, and, I imagine, the magnitude and detail characteristic of the 1700s.

Vlaminck's Scene - My Opinion

By Hsin-Ju Fang

When I saw Vlaminck’s Scene for the first time, it attracted to me. Although it doesn't catch everyone's eyes, it really touches my heart because I like its lonely people and houses. Vlaminck didn't use a lot of colors to draw it, and he just used blue, black and white. All of them are very simple but profound. I really like those colors which let me feel heavy and silent. In addition, the lonely people in this painting seem to leave this place and just take a last look at it. I think that he doesn't want to leave but has to. It's very melancholy but I love the power of the deep emotion.

Grunewald's Christ on the Cross - My Opinion

By Ben Ng

Grunewald’s Christ on the Cross makes me feel scared. The background colour is black and the character in this picture is a person who almost died or already died. So it gives people an uncomfortable feeling when people look at it. The imagine of this picture for me is suffering. You can see the Christ’s body is very thin and it was injured seriously. In addition, his expression is very sad and very painful. For those reasons, I feel this is not a good picture for me. I don’t like the sad picture.

A Wreath of Flowers - My Opinion

By Ken

Willian Brymner's A Wreath of Flowers makes me feel very comfortable when I was looking at it. The main color of this painting is green, which is the color that I like the most in my whole life. I like the sea, trees, and grass in the painting because they give me the feeling of relaxation. Also, it makes me want to go to the place that is in the painting. The four little girls are very free on the little hill, but I don't think they have much fun. However, I like that kind of life.

Sleeping Baigneuse - My Opinion

By Alex Mok

Renoir’s Sleeping Baigneuse gives me a free, unrestrained feeling. In the painting, a naked woman is sleeping with a towel that covers her private part. When I see this painting, she is showing me an enjoyable face. I don’t see she has any pressure. Also, she probably doesn’t care about all the things around her, especially other people’s seeing her. She just wants to enjoy and relax in her own world, a dream world that is in her mind. In fact, she is teaching us one thing: if we can put down our dignity or duty to look around the world, we will find that the world is really beautiful.

The Phantom of the Snow - My Opinion

By Rain Wu

William Blair Bruce's The Phantom Of The Snow makes me feel calm. Even though it's sad for the man in the painting, he cannot do anything to stop it. This painting attracts me because it shows how weak our life is. When death is coming, we cannot avoid it. In the painting, a man sits in the snow and he is almost dead. In front of him is his spirit. He tries to catch it back, but he cannot. Human death is natual. It's a part of the life cycle. Although it is sad to hear about that, it is just a proccess.

The History of the Bicycle

By Saori Kimura

The bicycle was not invented by one individual or in one country. It took nearly 100years and many individuals for the modern bicycle to be born.

Bicycles first appeared in Scotland in the early 1800s, and were called velocipedes. These early bicycles had two wheels, but they had no pedals. Soon a French inventor added pedals to the front wheel. However, pedaling was hard because velocipedes were very heavy.

In addition, British engineers and American manufacturers changed wheels. They thought the wheels should be different shapes. So they invented the bicycle which had different wheels.

The British altered the design one last time. They made the two wheels equal in size and created a mechanism that uses a chain to turn the rear wheels. With this final change, the modern bicycle was born, and bicycle riding became very popular. Bicycles revolutionized the way people traveled. Today, millions of people worldwide ride bicycles for transportation, enjoyment, sport, and exercise.

3 Minutes and 21 Seconds of Fame

American modern artist Andy Warhol gave a photo exhibit in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1968. The catalogue for the exhibit contained the following quote:
In the future everyone will be world-famous for fifteen minutes.

This morning, one of our ESL students used up 3 minutes and 21 seconds of her fame. She was interviewed on CBC Radio's Daybreak North, the morning show usually broadcast from Prince George, BC, but today, from right here in Fort St. John.

Here's the link: Viviana's Interview

By the way, Viviana, do you have any ideas for using up the rest of your "fame" minutes?

What We Can Do for the Environment

By Yuko Maekawa

Environmental destruction, global warming, environmental pollution C Today, we have many environmental problems. Now, the earth is dying. If we don't solve these problems, the earth will disappear in the future. We must notice these problems soon and we have to do and change something because of them. Actually, we have already become aware of them, and many people, governments, companies, and institutions around the world have begun to act for the environment. We can do many things for the environment by ourselves. I will introduce some examples we can do easily.

Do you know the word "5Rs"? Nowadays, this word has become popular in many countries. The definition or number of this word is different from country to country; for example, "5Rs" changes to "4Rs" in Korea. In this time, I will tell you "5Rs" in Japan mainly. The definition of "5Rs" in my country is Refuse, Reuse, Recycle, Reduce, and Repair.

1. Refuse: You can refuse to get things which can be garbage after. For example, when you go to a supermarket and buy something there, a person at a register gives you a plastic bag in order to put things you buy in it. But, if you bring your bag from your house, you don't need it. So, you can refuse and reduce garbage. Nowadays, Eco bags are popular in many countries. Thanks to this, the number of people who refuse plastic bags is increasing.

2. Reuse: You can reuse things you or other people use. We can often see flea markets, used shops, and other kinds of these shops. In these shops, we can sell clothes and many things we already used and don't need, and we can get some money by selling something there. And, we can also buy things other people used and sold there. So, by selling things you don't need or buying things other people don't need, you can reuse. For another example, we can send clothes and things you used and don't need to people who need them. In the world, many people don't have enough money to buy clothes or things they need, and you can help them by sending things you don't need. I think that's a good example.

3. Recycle: probably, you know this word. Recycle is the most popular word in the
"5Rs." The resources on the Earth are limited. We can't use them freely for ever. So, we need to recycle the resources we used as much as possible. I think recycling is the most effective and easiest thing we can do for the environment.

4. Reduce: I said before the resources are limited. So, we need to reduce the quantity of the resources we use. To turn off lights, to not use water, oil, electricity and other resources more than you need, you can reduce in many ways. You can also reduce the quantity of garbage. You already know how to reduce them.

5. Repair: Do you throw away broken things soon? If you repair them, you can use them more. It may not be easy, but you should repair for the environment. I found some other words on other countries' sites, like Remake, Renew, and Reform.

Finally, I will introduce two words I found out on another country's site. They're Respect and Rethink. You should respect and thank environment, resources and Earth more. And, you should think about the environment. When you use resources or buy something, you can rethink, "Is it really needed?" We can help the environment in many ways easily. We must notice, know, understand, and do!

The Effects of a Natural Disaster

By Ben Ng

Disaster is a terrible thing and it also brings many serious effects to humans. Earthquake is a kind of disaster which affects humans most in their life. Earthquake is a common disaster that is all over the world but the difference is its intensity. Some places always have earthquake but although the intensity is not very intense, the effect will also be serious. There are some effects from the earthquake:

Earthquakes will hurt or make people die and destroy their houses. When the earthquake happen, the buildings will destroy and the rocks will slide down from the mountain, and the traffic will become confused so people will be lose their house and be hurt or die buy those things. On the other hand, the hospitals will be become full by the people who were hurt because there are too many people hurt at the same time. Some emergency patients will die because they cannot get the cure at the appropriate time. Also people were hurt and cannot get enough medicine. Furthermore, people lost their house in the house in the earthquake and they need to live in the tents but the supply of tents is limited. Sometimes a few families live in one tent. If there are a lot of people living in one area, the environment will become bad in that area and the virus of diseases will spread quickly. The outbreak of epidemic diseases will happen easily. This is a very dangerous thing for humans.

Pecuniary loss will happen because of the earthquake. First, the government needs to clean the roads after earthquake because there are many rocks, pieces of wood, and the wreckage of the buildings remaining on the roads. So government needs to clean them up. Second, after cleaning the roads, the government needs to repair the roads which were broken. The roads will be rent by the earthquake ant the bridges will be destroyed by the rocks. If the government doesn’t repair them, the traffic will be confused so repair to the roads are very important. Then, the government needs to rebuild the houses. The government needs to use a billion dollars to rebuild the houses for the victims because many houses were destroyed by the earthquake. People haven’t places to live. This is a serious problem. Finally, helping the victims and supply the necessary things. The government will supply the water, food, clothes, tents, medicine, and some necessary things to the victims. Those things will cost a lot of money so I said earthquake is a pecuniary loss.

Earthquake will cause some other disasters to happen such as: tsunami and snow slide. Those are very serious disasters. Do you remember the tsunami in south Asia on Dec, 26, 2004? This tsunami killed almost 300,000 people. It was an under sea earthquake. However, the earthquake is the source of these disasters.

In conclusion, earthquakes are very serious problem for human life. It will destroy everything but nowadays we have science. It can forecast when the earthquake will come. Although we have this kind of technology, we cannot believe it completely. Anyway, the earthquake will give humans profound effects and the effects are very serious.

It's Your Party Time!

By Richard Chan

Did you have this experience of a party? A party can help you relax when you feel so bored with your business, and also you can meet some new friends at a party. Do you know how to organize a successful party whether it is a birthday, New year or Christmas party? There are several things you should know. First off, hold a place, mark a day and time for the celebration. Second, call your friends who you would like to attend. Nowadays, using cell phone, E-mail or MSN are very common and useful ways that you can do it easily. Then, decorating the party place is a very important part of a party. It can make a party romantic! After that, prepare some delicious foods for sharing. Another important thing, if you are all at least 19 years old, alcoholic drinks are a must item for the party. Last but not least, I’m sure if you have done all that, everybody will be in a good mood. Hope you have a great party!

Are you a party animal? Or expert? On the other hand, compared with speed dating, I think a party is more feasible than speed dating. If you are an In person, you should dress very well to attend the party because it is a good choice so that you can show off your fashionable clothes and accessories. Wear your GIORGIO ARMANI suit, DOLCE & GABBANA glasses and ROLEX watch, spray the DIOR HOMME fragrance…… All the hi-end brand products can help you be an enchanting person to pick up a Party Girl easily if you dress right like that. As well, an i-phone 3G is your best partner. It is not just a cell phone. There are so many functions to serve you. When you’re at a party, you’re totally checking a girl out. First things first, try to talk to her: ”May I have your cell number?”,”Could I take a photo with you?” As far as I see, girls might say ”yes.” That means you have already succeeded 50%. But you could continue your conversation. Ask her, “What would you like to drink?” Remember you are an In person; when you drink “cheers!” with her, don’t forget to show your ROLEX watch. Be sure you can give her a nice first feeling. Eventually, if you can catch the chance, she will be your girlfriend!

My Views of New York City

By Hsin-Ju Fang

When people talk about New York, their conversations are always full of the American dream, material, art, fashion , and colorful life. I was so lucky that I found the cheapest ticket so I could fly to New York on vacation . Before I went to New York, I had already searched for the information about the famous views of New York. There is a lot of information about New York. But, after I visited that amazing city, I think there are three kinds of things that are worthy to see: famous views, the people, and the subway.

First of all, there are many famous views in New York, such as Time Square, the Empire State Building, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, and so on. Although I have seen the pictures of them before, seeing them with my own eyes is totally different from seeing the pictures of them. When you visit them, you can really understand why they are so famous. They are great and I am small. I can feel something special that touches my heart. In my opinion, my favorite is the Statue of Liberty. When I walked into Statue of Liberty, I really felt what the freedom of the American spirit is.

The next interesting thing is the people who are in New York. There are many people from different countries. When you walk on the street, you won’t just hear people speak in English. They may speak in Chinese, French, Italian, Spanish and so on. Some of them are residents and the others are travelers. It’s easy to know who they are. The residents always look busy and in a hurry. They walk quickly and definitely the way that they want to go. People who always look at the map are almost always travelers. They are so excited about what tehy see and take pictures everywhere. It is so interesting to see many different people at the same time. I think that’s why people always say, “New York is an ethnic melting pot.”

Finally, I want to introduce New York’s subway. It’s not only complex but also dirty. Although I had already known it was complex, I never thought it would be so dirty. It’s so disgusting because I could smell pee and poo everywhere. My friend told me that’s because homeless people usually pee and poo in the subway and you have to be careful when you sit down. It’s terrible. And then, you can find many pieces of gum and sputum on the floor, and you have to watch your step. There is a lot of garbage beside the track. Sometimes, you can see some mice running on the track. It’s so weird because I think that New York is clean and advanced. But, unfortunately, New York has an old subway system. Although it’s old and dirty, every station has their own special point. You can see different art on the wall. Sometimes, you can see people perform on the platform. It’s amazing and fascinating.

When I was in New York, I really felt that this city is diverse and energetic. There are many interesting or artistic things. I learned a lot form this amazing city. Although New York isn’t what I imagined, it is still stunning and surprising.

How to Find a Boyfriend or Girlfriend

By Ali Belhis

Can the life be lived alone? Certainly, simple people ask themselves this question. But, is it in their cases their own choice? Or, can’t they find the way to meet a mate? Anyway, human relationships are a very wide subject. One of the aspects is how two people can meet each other, or how a single person can find a boyfriend or a girlfriend.

At first, it is useless to use our energy everywhere. It is safe to economize it, because the way to find the person corresponding to ourselves is long and difficult. That is why it is more sure to have a strategy. Before all, we have to ask ourselves which type of person we would like to approach. For that, it is necessary to set a profile about physical characteristics, about characteristics of the mind, such as the feelings, the hobbies and so on. However, until then, the search remains in a theoretic step. Now, the most important is to act. The most difficult things to do are yet to come.

The second step is to list people who can help you, especially people who have male or female friends in their relationships. After, with a lot of patience, we can visit them or call them. At this point, we can explicitly ask them their opinions without beating around the bush, and try to convince them to help us. Whatever, if we are unsuccessful to obtain their cooperation, we can alter this plan. A good idea is to begin to go in the fashionable places, like cafés, restaurants, clubs, and so on. At this time, to be courageous is necessary, because we have to use subtle ways to go toward new people and overall, we are frequently alone.

Third, what kinds of attitude make us interesting? To be witty is an advantage. We can also speak humorously to start a conversation. Meanwhile, to behave romantically can help to keep touch and to initiate a first contact. Next, with imagination and a lot of work, we can make him or her think that we are the most wonderful person on Earth, on the condition that we don t bother her or him.

Finally, to share our life with someone else is fun, but it can take a lot of time before we can find someone. There is not only one way, but there are as many ways as people. All people are different and each has to choose his or her own way.

It Was An Ordinary Day in B Reading

By Pamela den Ouden

It was an ordinary day in B Reading class. Our text for the day was a selection about marketing, products, naming new products, and advertising. It was a perfect opportunity for group work. A bit a shuffling to get people settled in their groups, and they were ready for the assignment. Here's what they had to do:

Create a product--either a snack food or a drink--give it a name, make an ad.

This type of work in class calls for a lot of creativity, and the students were certainly up to the task, as you can see below.

In addition to the print ad, they also made a 30-second radio commercial. I'm still looking for a way to upload the sound files.

The synergy and energy of the students turned an ordinary day into an extraordinary experience for all of us.

Come to think of it, the extraordinary is the ordinary in this class!

Kyoto, My Hometown

By Jessica Shiga

-Okoshiyasu ~Kyoto~

My hometown is Kyoto. Kyoto has more than 1200 years of history and is a very interesting city in Japan. Kyoto’s seasonal changes are superb. Especially, so many people visit Kyoto in the sightseeing seasons of spring and autumn. Cherry blossoms in the spring, and autumn colours (=maple) in the autumn. It is terrific! Many tourists visit Kyoto to see those.

I think the reason for the popularity is because the beautiful buildings of the shrines and temples combine with the scenery of the cherry blossoms or autumn colours. I stated above about the shrines and temples in Kyoto. This is one of the characteristics. As I have said, history of Kyoto is international sightseeing city. If you visit Kyoto, you’ll encounter many shrines and temples. I want to recommend “Kiyomizu-dera (=temple).”

It’s sacred to the Statue of eleven-faced Kannon (=the Goddess of Mercy)” and the façade is a national treasure. It says “Kiyomizu stage” on the façade. Moreover, there is a proverb. “Jump off the Kiyomizu stage” means “pluck up your courage and make a big decision.” You can see a glorious view out over the city from “Kiyomizu stage.”

Next, “Maiko” and “Geiko” are famous too in Kyoto. Even today, entertainment areas where they practice their art fluorish in Kyoto. “Maiko” and “Geiko” learn dancing and how to play musical instruments like “Koto” to entertain their customers with artistic skill. “Maiko” are women undertaking training to become “Geiko” and have a flashy appearance. However, parlors where visitors can directly meet a “Maiko” and “Geiko” turn away first-time customers. In other words, it is rather difficult to find women. I think that’s why they are really popular among visitors. You visit “Gion” on the chance that you might meet them.

Speaking of Kyoto, don’t forget about “Kyoto cuisine.” It’s delicate, refined, and tender. High class Japanese restaurants serve “Kyoto cuisine,” which is especially marvelous. If you want to eat, it might be expensive but sometimes can be eaten for affordable prices. Carefully made lunches that are reasonably priced are very good!

You can enjoy discriminating palate and you can enjoy visually too. In addition, we call “Obanzai” our home cooking. “Obanzai” means “plain food.” Kyoto’s tables support not flamboyant Kyoto cuisine but “Obanzai.” What’s more, I want to recommend two places. One is “Nishiki Market.” The Nishiki Market extends for 390 meters through the center of Kyoto. Shops selling fresh food such as fish have lined this marketplace for many years, and this area is also known as “Kyoto’s kitchen.”

Next, I want to recommend “Machiya.” “Machiya” is a building constructed in a style that has been handed down from old time in Kyoto. Many “Machiya” combine the owner’s residence and business. In recent years, the beauty of these classic buildings has been reappraised, and they have attracted attention following transformations into restaurants, cafés, galleries, and so on.

Then, there are many traditional industries. For example, “Nishijin textiles,” “Yu-zen dyeing,” “Kiyomizu ceramic wares,” “Fushimi refined sake,” and so on. We have many cultural assets too.

Finally, Kyoto’s fascination is harmony with old and new.

I have many other places to tell you about. I think Kyoto is very deep and it’s just right for sightseeing.

"Welcome to Kyoto!!"

Japanese Domestic Brand Cars

By Yusuke Tani

I like Japanese cars, but sometimes Japanese brands are funny. Lexus was born in the U.S, but it is a Toyota. In 2006, Lexus was sold in Japan. Anyway, cars are kind of my hobby. Especially, I like watching car advertisements on TV. Japan has a lot of domestic cars, especially compact cars and minivans.

I think Japanese national brand cars should be sold in North America. Some cars have different names between North America and Japan. Some cars have the same names between North America and Japan, but different cars. For instance, there is Honda Odyssey. Japan has a different Odyssey.

Japanese car companies have lots of money, more than North American companies because Japanese car companies have great parts companies, and they succeeded to make cars efficiently. Toyota and Honda can make almost all cars in one factory. They can almost make the cars by the mechanization more efficiently than GM and Ford. There are a lot of lineups in Japan with a little demand because Toyota and Honda can make from Sedan to Minivan on one platform.

They spend a lot of money on TV-CM. Japanese people think English is a cool language, so car ads have used lots of English words. It’s cool. I like Honda CMs because Honda’s commercial has humorous ideas and creativity.

Copy the links below into your browser address bar to see the car commercials.

My Favourite Food

By Brian Woo

I want to introduce my favorite food to the students. It is one of the famous foods
from Korea. Almost all people enjoy eating it and love it. It is named fatback; it is a part of pork. If you don’t know fatback, it is like a part of bacon. Why many people enjoy eating it is because it has several different tastes and you eat it together with some different vegetables.

I’d like to eat it with kimchi, mushrooms, and onions. These help to remove the
oily taste. Also a few vegetables, fatback, and rice made fried rice will bring
satisfaction.

In addition, I was interested in the fact that new style fatback and fatback source
is discovered every year. So many people enjoy eating at anytime.

In the picture, you can see what fatback is and feel the atmosphere of restaurant. You can know.

My Preferred Bands of Hard Rock

By Pedro Manuel Paz

When I was 13 years old, I met with my block friends every afternoon. We played soccer and rode bicycle. One day, my friend Angelo said "Come on everybody, I’d like you to listen to this group." He put his cassette in the radio recorder and every body listened quietly and carefully to the song. I had never listened to it before. The drums hit my head and I followed the rhythm with my feet. He said, "It is Hard Rock." Now after many experiences, my preferred groups are Metallica and Aerosmith. I would like to talk about them, and I can say that I will never stop to listening to Hard Rock.

The first time that I listened to his song, "Nothing Else Matters," I can’t believe the incredible sounds of the guitar. Since that moment I knew that Metallica will be one of my preferred groups. This band was formed in 1981 in L.A. by the drummer Lars Ulrich, who posted advertisements in the newspaper and after, he received answers of the members. Metallica has been characterized by its instrumental style and aggressive music. They have 9 studio albums, 22 music videos, 43 singles and they won seven Grammy awards and have 5 consecutive albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200. I won’t forget their concert in Bogota. It was amazing. At the moment I am enjoying their new production issued in 2008.

.
I am convinced that Aerosmith has much better production of video music. I can see this because they have an excellent thematic, wonderful effects, innovative themes, creative style, and incredible music and lyrics. Aerosmith was created by Steven Tyler 38 years ago, in Sunapee, New Hampspire and still has the same five members. Actually, they have introduced more than 14 productions in the market that won many platinum and gold records. They have had 21 one song chart in the top 40 of the Billboard hot 100. Songs like "Cryin," "Crazy," and "I don’t want to miss a thing," among others. In addition to recording and performing music, Aerosmith has also been involved with film and video games. Aerosmith will be working in the rock scene for many years.

In conclusion, I had listened to many groups and styles of hard rock, such as Bon Jovi, Poison, G&R, and other groups, but I am sure that Metallica and Aerosmith will be in the history of rock like two of the most important bands in the world and they will be recognized like The Beatles or the Rolling Stones in the future.

How to Find a Girlfriend

By Theo Lao

Do you feel lonely? Don’t stay at home! Let’s go out and get some fresh air. Don’t be afraid to date girls. Who wants to live with a dog throughout his life? Do you know why you don’t have a girlfriend? The reason isn’t because you are not handsome enough. It is because you are shy. I know that it is not easy to become sociable. But don’t worry about that! If you are not extremely ugly, you also can have a girlfriend. That’s not a serious problem for you. It is because I’m not handsome too. But I have a girlfriend. There are some ways to find a girlfriend.

If you don’t know how to date a girl, you can ask your friends who are good at these things. Your friends may teach you how to talk with the girls in funny ways and don’t be shy. The most important thing is that they can share their experience with you. Take, for instance, that you can send a gift to the girl when you see her on the first date. It can bring her a good image of you. However, you may still not know what to do. You can buy some books that the topic is "How To Find A Girlfriend." I think those books can give you some help. The next thing is that you can do some practice with any female friends before you date your target girl.

If you cannot find any way to meet some girls, don’t worry about that! Maybe you are in a boys school. However, most of your classmates must have girlfriends. You can ask them to organize dinners with their female friends, or walks, or some other activities. If the girl is pretty good, you can ask for her cell phone number or MSN. After that, you can date this girl’s friends. That means that you have a new group of friends, female.

For my experience, making the girls feel happy is very important. Let them know that you are very funny. If you already have these experiences, don’t waste any chance to date the girls. One day, you may see your dream girl on the street or something else you haven’t seen before. Don’t be shy. Just do it and ask her cell phone number or MSN. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t matter. It’s because you don’t do this or you may regret it all your life. On the other hand, you can also meet girls at pubs, through friends, library, and any public places.

Brother! Don’t worry that you can’t find a girlfriend. You can have any shortcoming but being shy. You can find many ways to make friends with girls such as colleges, streets, libraries, and coffee shop, etc. Please remember that the first step is to make them happy and let they know you are very funny. If you follow these ways to find a girlfriend, you can easily do it.

The Santa Claus Parade

By Ayana

On November 21st,I went to watch the Santa Parade with my friends. The weather was so cold. It was 20 below. But I felt more cold. We went near to the Christmas tree. Then I took pictures with a big bear. And then we went to the opposite side of Mama Panda Restaurant. There were so many people. We waited for Santa Claus parade there. It took 40 minutes. My feet were so painful. I thought I'll die.

Finally the Parade started. So many floats passed in front of me. They were so beautiful. I was impressed by the floats. I took many pictures, but unfortunately my camera's batteries were dead. I wanted to cry. So I just watched. And then we went to get some hot-dogs and hot chocolate. It was so good. And we stood in front of the fire. So I felt so warm. I was so happy. And then I looked at the big Christmas tree. It was so good. I won't forget that day forever.

How to Get Rid of Your Boyfriend

By Rain Wu

When you are lonely, you will feel lonely; when you are sad,you will want someone who can give you a warm hug. So it is time for you to look for a boyfriend because he can give you a wonderful attitude to life. But, when you two live for a long time, you will find many of his shortcomings and you can't bear it anymore, and the reason that makes you to start a relationship can't let you to maintain the feelings of love. That means you should say good-bye to him. If you are an "easy come, easy go" person, you can choose to talk to him face to face or send an e-mail to him or phone him.If you are a softie, you can't bear to see him cry. How can you do? It is easy if you follow this method.

First,I will teach you some of the most basic ways. In China, we have a slang, "First cry, second argue, third hanged." It’s original intent is to give women some suggestion to restore their partners, but I think it can also be used to get rid of your boyfriend,if you just think on my way.

So,what should you do? First is to cry. Most of the men are afraid of women crying because their self-esteem is always too high. So enjoy your tears, cry as much as possible, no matter about big or small things. Cry until he can't bear it. Then he will leave you far away.

If the first way doesn’t work, then move on. Second is not to cry; it's to fight. You just need to keep annoying him until he can't accept it. Then, he will leave you too.

If that second way can't make him go, then you should use the final way, which is intimidation. You always said to him many times that you're really disappointed in the world, and you don’t want to live in this world anymore. Let us go die together. He would be afraid and leave you quickly as he can. Those ways just a basic method for you to get rid of your boyfriend.

Next, I will teach your some methods that people commonly use.It is to ignore him. You just need to block him, such as don’t answer his call, and don’t reply to his e-mail. Don’t see him, and the better way is take a long vacation; maybe about a week is okay. Then, when you come back,he will complain to you that you left him alone. Actually, you just need to keep ignoring him. Later,he will silently depart. In fact, you can be totally reversed. That means you can choose to be his Queen. You are the biggest. So, do your best to spend his money to buy whatever you want, and promise a lot of empty promises to him.The most important is to do some things to let him feel no reputation in front of his friends. HAHA~So,he won't stay with you any more. It is a little bit familiar? You have already tried it before,so does it work? Still not working? Don’t be afraid. I still have another method.

Finally, I think it must work. It’s because I can't find anyone that can bear it. It’s having an affair, but you need your friend to help you. Sure it must be a male. You and your friend go shopping holding hands, and purposely walk beside your boyfriend. Later, he must ask you,but you need to say no. For many times,I’m sure he will stand out and be angry with you. So, he won't appear in your life.

In conclusion, getting rid of your boyfriend is very easy, and I think those methods can help you. So, never be annoyed because you want to get rid of your boyfriend because you know how to do it. You’re free!! Choose one of them. Act today!!

How to Make Up with Your Boyfriend

By Andrea Ortiz

If you dump your boyfriend, you will have done many things. These help you decide on the time or way that you dump him. The first step is to call him and tell him all things that you feel at the moment. If he doesn’t give you a good answer or doesn’t care, maybe he doesn’t wait to hear all the things that you told him, so you will have given him more time.

The second step is to send letters or email. Now we have more advantage than ten years ago. First we have easy access to the Internet and it gives us different ways for you send something in writing. For example, you can find various virtual letters and virtual gifts. So if you know to manage its, you can use this tool. My advice is that you write everything that you need to tell him.
The next step is to give a gift, something that he likes. For this step, you need to remember what he likes, for example his hobbies, clothing brands, favorite singer or preferred food.

The fourth step is to share with him special situations. If he has finished his university, college or course, you can make a party or simple meeting with his friends. I am sure that he will like it.

After that, you can invite him to an evening meal and you must choose an elegant restaurant or famous restaurant where you feel comfortable. However you can go to a place that you had gone together. This helps you to remember good moments. If you remember the anniversary date, you can go with him this day. For this dinner, you will need time, and then it’s better if you plan the evening meal on a weekend when you will have more time for both.

Finally, if you see that he doesn’t answer your email, calls, or gifts, you will have to accept that he forgot you or he just has a girlfriend. If these situations are happening, you will have to have a good time alone and you will have evaluate why you dumped him or why you wanted to make up with your boyfriend. Maybe, the situation or the trouble is in your hands or because of you.

Engdangered Wildlife Species

By Genet

What are wild animals? Where do they live? Wild animals are the animals that live without human pressure or outside of human areas. They lie in the forest, jungle, in the ocean, and in the snow. The bad news is these animals are in danger. Some of them are very close to dsiappearing. Le’s see some animals that are endangered, like the Ethiopian wolf, panda bears, and polar bears.

The Ethiopian wolf has a bright chestnut colored coat, bushy tail, pointed ears, slender snout, and long legs. This Ehtiopian wolf exists only in Ehtiopia. This animal gets hunted by local people for its skin. Right now, they’re protected.

Pandas are found in China. Pandas are rare today because of hunting. They’re very beautiful and attractive animals. Poachers kill these animals for their hides, which are very expensive.

Polar bears are considered endangered too. Because of global warming and hunting, and especially with global warming, their habitat is melting. Polar bears live only in the Arctic.

Clearly these animals are endangered. Climate, global warming,a nd humans put all these animals in danger. Right now, the Ethiopian wolf, panda bears, and polar bears are protected.

Basketball

By Niko

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of five active players each try to score points against one another by propelling a ball through a 10 feet high hoop under organized rules. Basketball is one of the most popular and widely viewed sports in the world.

Points are scored by shooting the ball through the basket above; the team with more points at the end of the game wins. The ball can be advanced on the court by bouncing it or passing it between teammates. Disruptive physical contact is not permitted and there are restrictions on how the ball can be handled.

Through time, basketball has developed to involve common techniques of shooting, passing and dribbling, as well as players' positions, and offensive and defensive structures. Typically, the tallest members of a team will play center or one of two forward positions, while shorter players or those who possess the best ball handling skills and speed, play the guard positions. While competitive basketball is carefully regulated, numerous variations of basketball have developed for casual play. In some countries, basketball is also a popular spectator sport.

While competitive basketball is primarily an indoor sport, played on a basketball court, less regulated variations have become exceedingly popular as an outdoor sport among both inner city and rural groups.

How to Annoy Your Boss

By Ken

Do you want to annoy your boss after you plan to work at another company? Before you leave the company that you now work at, you can play some trick on the boss who treated you with bad attitude. Now, it is time for you to avenge yourself on your ferocious boss, though you can't make fun of your boss very seriously because it may affect your future. A revenge that is just for fun is okay because you have to pretend that everything bad that happened to your boss was just an accident, no purpose, and carelessness. Especially if you are having a part-time job, it could be a very good experience for your whole life because when you are grown up and have a full-time job, which is very important to your family, you have no chance to do it. Treasure this opportunity! Once you make a decision to annoy or make a fool of your boss, you can follow the following steps.

First of all, I suggest you can play a big trick on your boss first because the boss wouldn't discover your purpose at the first. And also, you can encourage yourself because once you have played a big trick on your boss, you wouldn't afraid to play a little trick on your boss, such as making fun or fooling your boss. I suggest you spill coffee on your boss and act as if it is an accident. It makes him in an awkward predicament and he doesn't have a chance to blame you. You can also knock on his door very loudly when he is thinking or doing something important.

The next step is to make your boss feel bad about you and your attitude. It is time for you to relax because it is time for you to do something that you like to do during your work time. You can surf the Internet, hand around in the office, or hide somewhere in your company. Staying in the washroom is a good idea because you can have your own toilet to sit on and no one can bother you. You can also date a female colleague during work time and catch every chance to slack off. If I were you, I would break the records of Winmine in every single computer in your company because I like to play Winmine very much. Just do the thing that you like.

The last step is the step for you to excite your boss to fire you. The thing that you did to your boss has already made him angry and he already has bad feelings to you. To neglect your duty is the easiest way to get fired. And also, you can remind him the date or the time of an important appointment or meeting in a totally wrong time or place. Maybe you can just forget and not remind him. You can also do the thing that is owned by your new company in your company now. It can give your new boss a good impression and you don't need to waste time in the company for doing something stupid in order to annoy your boss. After you do those things to your boss, you had better make preparation that you are going to be fired.

If you follow the steps above, I am sure that you can achieve your plan. Once you implement one step, don't look back and just go forward until you arrive at your goal. I need to remind you one more time, do those things after you are hired by another company or you don't need that job anymore. If you decide to do it, I wish you can be successful. Have fun and good luck.

Coming of Age Day in Japan

By Aya Nishimura

The coming of age ceremony is celebrated on the second Monday of January. Its Japanese name is "Seijin no hi." It was established as a national holiday in 1948.

On this day, all young people who turn 20 years old in that year take part in a coming of age ceremony. In Japan, twenty is the age considered as the beginning of adulthood. It is also the minimum legal age for voting, drinking, and smoking. The ceremonies are now usually organized by local governments, but they are sometimes also hosted by schools, companies, and public organizations.

These days, men generally wear business suits to the ceremony, although once in a while men wearing dark-colored kimonos can be seen. Almost all women choose to wear traditional Furisode. A furisode is a style of kimono with long sleeves that drape down. Also, women wear special white fur collars. A full furisode kimono can cost as much as a new car. Some families might rent one or pass one from mother to daughter.

In fact, I'm 21 years old now. so I have attended a coming of age ceremony already. I also wore a pink furisode that day. It was precious day for me because I don't have many chances to wear a furisode though I'm a Japanese girl. Maybe I won't wear a furisode for a while.

It is the memory that is unforgettable for me on the coming of age day.

How to Get a Boyfriend or Girlfriend

By Yu Ihara

Now, do you have a boyfriend or a girlfriend? If you don’t, do you have a time to feel lonely, or have you ever wanted a boyfriend or a girlfriend? If you have one, you won’t spend Christmas or your birthday alone anymore. And you can enjoy a time with your boyfriend or girlfriend. Sometimes, you may have some troubles about him or her. So, you can experience not only good things but also bad things. All you experience is an important part of your life. It’s not difficult to get a boyfriend or girlfriend if you follow six steps. But, don’t forget this: "It depends on you and your partner."

First, if you have a person who you like, you should try to talk to him or her. If you don’t have a person who you like, you don’t need a boyfriend or girlfriend. Anyway, if you like someone, you should make a good impression on him or her. The key of this is to smile as many times as you can especially in front of him or her. Next, you should try to get his or her phone number and email address. In short, you ought to get in touch with him or her and make the relationship better.

Then, you can try to have a date with him or her. This step is quite difficult because you have to plan for a date. For example, you have to think where you should go, and what you should do. I recommend that you go to watch a movie because you can get a topic about the movie you watched. Accordingly, an uneasy silence doesn’t fall over you. Moreover, watching a movie can help you if your weak point is talking because while you are watching a movie, you don’t have to talk with him or her. After that, all you have to do is repeat the invitation to him or her to go on a date.

Finally, if you feel you can get him or her, all you can do is to declare your feeling for him or her. I recommend you declare it for him or her face-to-face because this is easier for him or her to feel your feeling exactly. What is more, this is more difficult for him or her to refuse your feeling. If you declare your feeling by a phone or email, you have to prepare for that. This step is the most important, because, you should do your best. For instance, you have to think where you declare your feeling, what you say, and when you can do it. Don’t look down on the situation and atmosphere.

Eventually, everyone may experience something relative to a boyfriend or a girlfriend. He or she may be an important part of your life. That sounds very convincing because a boyfriend or a girlfriend can give something precious to you. Probably, just a friend doesn’t have the same meaning. If you don’t have a boyfriend or a girlfriend and you want a boyfriend or a girlfriend, you can do it!! I’m sure of it.
