The Sections of a Wind Orchestra
By Ayame Kasaki
There are many kinds of music bands such as brass band, wind orchestra, and orchestra spread all over the world. However, many people do not know about the main sections that are very important to create good music. In a wind orchestra, there are three main sections: woodwind, brass, and percussion.
First, woodwind consists mainly of flutes, clarinets, saxophones, double reeds, and bass strings. The characteristics of woodwinds are most instruments except flutes and bass strings have a reed to make sound, and most of them except flutes and saxophones are made from wood. These instruments, not including bass strings, have many holes to change notes. The woodwind section is good at making P (piano) sounds as compared to other sections, and also, their tone is usually softer than others.
The second section is brass. This section is generally made up of trumpets, horns, euphoniums, trombones, and tubas. These instruments have a big bell, so these can make bigger sounds than woodwinds. Unlike woodwind, brass instruments usually have only three or four pistons that are used for changing notes. To change notes from low to high, players have to use their mouth. Brass usually stands out, thus it always plays an active role in the fanfare.
The last section is called percussion, and sometimes, it is called rhythm team. This part is the most important group to beat out a rhythm and make the tempo like a conductor. That is why it is called rhythm team. This section is different from woodwind and brass. Percussion has many types of musical instruments like drums, keyboard instruments, cymbals and chimes, and most instruments are hit to make sounds. Therefore, players should be able to play all of them and keep the tempo exactly.
All of these sections have great roles and their own characteristics. If some part drops out, players cannot make good music. To make good music, players have to bring out their instruments’ features proficiently.

Ian Thorpe, a Great Swimmer
By Masato Inoue
Ian Thorpe is an Australia swimmer who specialises in
freestyle. First, he was born in Sydney, New South Wales, October 1982. The
five-year-old Thorpe followed his elder sister into the pool. As a young child,
Thorpe was sidelined by an allergy to chlorine. As a result he did not swim in
his first race until a school carnival at the age of seven. After that, Thorpe
gradually overcame the ailment and progressed to the captaincy of New South
Wales for the Australian Primary Schools championships in 1994. At 14 years and
5 months, Thorpe became the youngest ever male to be selected for the
Australian team, and he was a contestant in all twelve events, winning ten
individual gold and two bronze medals. Next in 1998 World Aquatics
Championship, Thorpe’s time was fourth fastest in history and made him the
youngest ever male individual work champion, aged 15 years and 3 months. After
the Athens Olympics, Thorpe took a year away from swimming, and he announced
his retirement in November 2006. From early 2011, Thorpe returned to swimming,
and he is targeting qualification for the 2013 World Championship in Barcelona.
He is still a good swimmer.

How to Make New Friends
By Lisa Goto
You have many ways to make new friends. First of all, you
have to smile to others. You have to smile at them with all your heart, so it’s
not good to force your smile. If you do that, you can’t communicate with others
because they understand your feelings. When you are with others, you always have
to have a smile on your face. Second, it’s good to exchange greetings. You have
to do that from you. If you wait for greeting from others, you can’t make
friends. You should remember others’ faces with which you have exchanged
greetings. This is useful way. You try to exchange greetings many times. That
is to remember your face to others. Finally, you have to throw away your
disgrace, bad idea, or bias against others. If you become shy, you can’t
communicate with them well. You also have to speak to others with having
courage. There is the most important thing. In conclusion, you can use many
methods to make new friends.
I'd Like to Live in the Future
By Ayaka
I want to live in the future period because I think
certainly there are a lot of convenient tools. I’m wondering about how
techniques such as cell phones and computers will advance. And the other reason
is because I just want to know my future. I want to know whether I will get
married and what kind of jobs I will get. I think the future period is
interesting because there are many things which I don’t know.

How to Get Good Grades
By Kana
If you want to get good grades, you have to make efforts at
both classes and home. In the class, you must not sleep. If you sleep during
the class, you will miss something important which teacher said. Also you
should speak up in the class more than one time because you will never forget
what you said. In addition, you have to ask the question to the teacher whenever
you have a question, If you leave the question as it is, you won’t be able to
know what teacher says. So you must not hesitate to ask the question. If you
are friendly with your teachers, it will make it easy to ask the questions, so
being friendly with your teacher is one of the knacks to get good grades.
Moreover, you have to make efforts at home. The first thing you should do at
home is review of the classes. The review makes it easy to memorize. Then, you
don’t have to spend a lot of time to remember before the tests. If you have
time to study more at home, you had better prepare for next day’s classes. It
makes it easy to understand next day’s classes. So if you make efforts a lot at
both classes and home, you can get good grades.
My Bedroom
By Ayaka
I think my room is simple. My room is the upstairs in my
house. When you enter my room, to the left there is a small bookshelf. I put 3
photographs and perfumes and textbooks. These photographs were with my family
and with my boyfriend and with friends. These perfumes were given to me by my
boyfriend. Next to the bookshelf, there is a bed. In front of the bed, there is
a TV. Near the TV, there is a large bookshelf. I put teddy bears and books and
so on. The carpet’s color is red. I like red.
The Flag of My Country, Japan
By Ayaka
I think the Japanese flag is the most simple in the world.
The flag is drawn a red circle on a white ground. It looks like sunrise, so it
is called "the rising sun flag" in English. In Japan, it’s called “Hinomaru.”
This red circle symbolizes the sunrise. The colors of red and white are traditional
happy colors in Japan.

Class Writing Project: What Should a Person Never Give Up?
By Pamela den Ouden
The following 10 entries were a project in our Reading 2 textbook: What should a person never give up?
People should never give up their honesty and integrity. We
have had many instances in the past few years and decades of athletes who took
illegal drugs to make their performance better. Canadian runner Ben Johnson was
exposed as a drug user after the Olympic Games. His career as a runner was
destroyed because winning became more important to him than being honest.
Integrity is more important than winning.
A Person Should Never Give Up their Sports
By Sam
A person should never give up their sports easily. It is
hard to succeed in every sports. It might take 10,000 times to do well even
more bravely to face different challenges that you meet and try to overcome all
of these challenges. If you avoid it, you will never be successful in your
life. On the contrary, trying to practice a demanding schedule is a good way to
be a great athlete. But sometimes it is difficult to keep training every day.
Don't Give Up Your Favorite Foods
By Hiroko Fujimoto
In my opinion, people should never give up their favorite
foods. First if they give up their favorite foods, they can’t concentrate on
their practice. I think if they eat their favorite foods a little bit, their
weight don’t gain. Next famous Japanese gymnastics player, Kohei Uchimura,
likes chocolate snacks and he doesn’t eat many vegetables. I mean giving up
their favorite foods is not always good things. Finally, if they know they can
eat their favorite foods after practice, they must be able to practice hard. If
they want to succeed, you don’t stand something too much.
Athletes Should Never Give Up Practice Time
By Ami Sakai
Athletes should never give up time in order to succeed.
First of all, they should never give up about practice time. For example, if
they want to go out with their friends, they always need practice. Second, they
should never give up about sleep time. For example, if they haven’t enough
sleep time, they can’t give a good performance. Finally, they should never give
up about their mind. If they want to get successful, they don’t think negative!
So, they should never give up time in order to succeed.
Taking a Rest is Important
By Yuko Fukuda
A person should never give up taking a rest to succeed at
one thing. First, we want a rest when we spend to practice a long time because
they might be tired. Secondly, if they don’t take enough to rest, they can’t do
a good job. Thirdly, if their brain is tired, they are negative because they
need a good condition brain for good performance, so they should take a rest
for brain, too. A person’s body need taking a rest for doing anything.
Never Give Up Hard Practice
By Mina Tanaka
A person should never give up hard practice. First, if you
want to be a good athlete, you must spend many time. For example, when your
practice doesn’t have free time, you are very tired. But it is good for you,
because you can practice very well. Secondly, if you hate your practice, you can’t
grow in your sport. Also, you can’t win a championship, so you should make an
effort to do it.
Never Give Up Time with Your Family
By Lily
A person should never give up time with their families in
order to succeed. Firstly, if you communicate with families less, they will
feel treat coldly. For example, the child feels that you don’t care for him,
and he will do bad things. Secondly, your parents believe you forget them due
to spending no time with them. Finally, your husband maybe leaves you because
you spend much time on work. So a person must spend more time with their families.
A Person Should Never Give Up Sleeping a Lot
By Koichi
A person should never give up sleeping a lot. Children
usually want to stay up late, but they have to sleep early, so they can’t go to
party and drinking. Also, they have no time to do something such as study
because of sleeping. They have to do something in the morning or noon or
evening.
What Should a Person Never Give Up?
By Sochae Chung
A person should never give up communicating with your
family. If you want to succeed at one thing, you need to sacrifice many things.
But only communication with family certainly supports you and your mental
health. When you lost a game or contest, you family’ll say “cheer up, you can
get next chance! Next time you’ll do
your best!” So you’ll solve your stresses by your family. Your family is the
most understanding people for you. I f you give up communicating with family,
nobody says “Cheer up!” It is poor. Therefore you should never give up
communicating with family.

How to Make a Good First Impression on a Teacher
By Mina Tanaka
We should give our teachers who we meet for the first time a
good impression. First, greeting is very important. It is common sense between
people. When we go by our teachers in the school, we should greet them. Also,
if we speak to our teachers, we should smile. Second, we should be careful
about our way of speaking. We can’t use slang because it is teenagers’ words.
So when we talk to older person who is our superior, we must use polite
language. Finally, we should follow good manners. If we talk about something
with our teachers, we mustn’t ask private questions. And, we should make eye
contact. If we turn our eyes away, we will have bad manners. We should keep
good manners during our conversation. If we should not forget these things, we
will have good communication and we can give a good impression.

Qualities of a Good Teacher

about students. Most importantly, he or she can explain information clearly. I
think a good teacher is a favorite with students.
A Memorable Day of my Life
By Mina Tanaka
To take part in the Tokai district’s rhythmic gymnastics tournament was one of
the memorable days of my life. I had done rhythmic gymnastics for 12 years. When
I was a high school student, I took part in this tournament. Then I was happy,
but this tournament had a high level. So I couldn’t get a good result. But it
was a good memory for me. Before I took part in this tournament, I didn’t have
any confidence, but after I performed my performance at the big tournament, I
liked to dance in public. I experienced it three times during high school. This
is really a good memory for me.
A Memorable Day of my Life
By Hiroko Fujimoto
The final swimming meet when I was a high school student was
one of the memorable days of my life. I belonged to the swim club when I was a
high school student. I was a breaststroker. I wasn’t very fast, but I liked to
swim. I always felt the strain before I swam at the meet. However, I was always
relaxed after I heard encouragement from my mates. So my last swimming was very
good. I established a new record for myself! I was very glad, so the final
swimming meet was my important memory.

Learning a New Language
By Hiroko Fujimoto
It is difficult to learn a new language. Other language pronunciations are difficult to listen to and speak. Sometimes, spelling differs from pronuncitation a little bit. We must write every word many times for learning. Finally, English grammar differs widely from Japanese. A new language is very difficult, so we have to study hard.

Summer is my favorite season. Every summer I go swimming with my friends and after that, we cook over a barbecue and do sparklers at the beach. Students have a long vacation in summer. During summer vacation we can do what we want to do, for example, travel, studying for a certifying examination, and spending time with my friends. Moreover, we don’t have to wear a lot of clothes in summer. So I like summer the best.

And I want to try any other exercise in Fort St. John.

Her home town doesn't have any college or university, but there are some schools. It doesn't have a shopping mall, but there are some interesting things to do and see there such as Guruduwala Sahib, gym, and temple. The weather is hot and dry. Best of all, the people are nice and kind. I think her home town is nice and peaceful.

How to Get Good Grades
By Amandeep Dhillon
There are many ways to get good grades in a program. First of all, if you want to get good grades, you must study hard. We all know it is very important to get good grades. Then, when a teacher hands homework, we had better do homework every day. For example, test, assignments, and practicals. If we don’t do homework every day, it starts bothering us. In addition, we should listen to lectures very carefully. If you don’t get something, you had better ask your teacher. Next, you had better make notes in your class; it’s very helpful when you will review. Also, you try to attend all classes; it helps to get good grades. We all know attendance increases the grades. Moreover, you had better take all midterm tests with excellent preparation. It’s also very useful to increase the grades. If you have labs in your program, you should perform well in labs. Finally, you must take care of your health. It’s rightly said, “A sound mind in a sound body.”

Haste Makes Waste
By Yuri Nishitani
The expression, “Haste makes waste,” is usually true. Here is a good example. I’m a member of the ballroom dance club, so I participated in a training camp last summer. The first day’s meeting time was 8:00 a.m. at Kansai Gaidai College. I left my house at 7:20 a.m. and waited for a bus. A bus hadn’t come. Unfortunately, a time schedule of the bus had changed becauise it was Bon (a Japanese Buddhist festival that takes place in August, when people show respect to the dead). After I noticed it, I walked to the college with my heavy bad so as not to be late. After a few minutes, a bus passed me. I didn’t have to walk!

Book Review: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
By Masami Taguchi
The title is "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes." It was written by Arthur Conan Doyle. This story is very famous. It takes place in London, England.
The main characters are Holmes, who is a great detective, and Dr. Watson, who is Holmes’ assistant and the narrator of the story. The book has four chapters. Each chapter tells about crime. Holmes infers and solves a lot of crimes, and Dr. Watson helps him to solve a crime without realizing it.
Chapter One tells about a secret message. It is my favorite chapter. Holmes found the key of the secret message easily, and he solved the secret message. After that, I guessed the suspect. Then he found a suspect.
I recommend this book. I was deeply absorbed in reading this book because it is interesting and I read it easily. I was impressed with this sentence in the book: “Every problem becomes very simple when you understand it.” I was satisfied with this sentence.

Variety is the Spice of Life
By Asami Kawamura
The expression, "Variety is the spice of life," is usually true. I was born in Hokkaido. When I was a junior high school student, I was planning what to do with my life, but when I was twelve years old, I moved to Osaka. I didn't want to leave Hokkaido and transfer to junior high school. In those days, I disliked Osaka, but my feeling changed as time went by. Now I love Osaka. I'm nineteen years old now. I live in Canada. I enjoy Canadian life. Sometimes, I make mistakes about something, but I learned from repeated mistakes. I never know what will happen next. Life is what I make it, so I want to visit more other countries. I want to enjoy my life.

The Influence of Family
By Asami Kawamura
Many things influence young adults. I think the family has more influence on them. Parents' views influence their children's perceptions of the world. For example, if your parents are racist, you might become racist, too. It's a baneful influence. If you spend a happy family life, you will never take to misconduct. In addition, your family sometimes gives good influence to you. For example, if you are worrying about what to do after graduation, then your family is the best adviser.

Learning by Observing and Doing
By Asami Kawamura
When I was an elementary school child, I belonged to the track and field club. I had taken part in the 100-meter hurdles many times. I liked to run. I wanted to improve my running skills. I learned by seeing things and by doing things. For example, I observed the good hurdler and I learned by imitation. I also learned by listening to people talk about things. For instance, I asked my club coach how to make progress with my running skills Then I practiced by following the good examples.

It's Impolite in Japanese Culture
By Asami Kawamura
In my culture, there are certain things that are considered impolite. For example, if you don't hold your rice bowl or a plate when you eat food, it's considered impolite. Because it is rude when you spill some food of your mouth on the table. It's also rude to talk with your mouth full. In addition, when you get an invitation and you go to someone's house, you should bring some present. It depends on the situation, but generally, some people bring a food or flower. It's impolite to bring a fragile article, kind of a glassware.

Learning by Doing
By Yuri Nishitani
Learning by doing things is the most effective way for me. First of all, when I buy a cell phone, I don’t read an explanation. I think it’s a waste of time to do such a thing. Secondly, when I play sports, I play it first of all. I understand with my body. Thirdly, when I study English, it’s important to speak or read or write. I think to do such a thing lets me have a good command of English. Doing things helps me to learn about everything.

Good Things Happen When You Least Expect Them
By Sae Kubota
Good things happen when you least expect them. Before I came here, I ate out with my high school friends. I met my friends after a long time, so we talked, laughed, and took some pictures. Then we ate many foods, and we talked and laughed again. After that, two friends stood up and went to somewhere. I thought that they went to the washroom. So I went on talking with my other friends. After a few minutes, my two friends came back with a cake. They were preparing a cake for me. A chocolate bar on the cake was written, “Sae, Hang in there!!” When I saw it, tears welled up in my eyes. We ate a cake and said, “Good bye.” My friends are very good.

My Busy Day
By Yohannes Feyissa
I had a busy day yesterday. I woke up at 7:00 a.m. and get dressed. Then I ate breakfast, read the paper, and checked my e-mail. After that, I took a bus to school and went to classes from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Next, I studied for a few hours at the library before I had a quiet dinner and went to work at the bookstore on campus. At 9:30 p.m., my friend drove me home. When I got home, I watched the news on TV and went to sleep.

My Uncle’s House Salon
By Yohannes Feyissa
It is 4 x 3 size and it’s medium and very clean. It has pieces of furniture, e.g., sofa and tables. There are 4 pictures. There are windows and they are sunny. There is a television and DVD player. The wall color is taupe. I like this room because I meet my cousin in there, and I never lived in this kind of salon, so that’s why I like it! This is the nicest salon I have every lived in.

Job Options
By Lin Lin
In a life, we rarely go through into the junction, and it is really hard to choose which way we have to go. After two years of contract work, the other intersection will come to me. It is to change my job. Since I arrived in Canada, I was non-stop to search job information for my future career. After two years of collecting, I got a few options: nurse assistant, medic job in the oil patch, and administrative assistant.
Firstly, a job is located in a health centre. To be a nurse assistant is related with my last two jobs. I had studied nursing assistant for a year and worked in a nursing home for one and a half years. This background will give me a choice to apply for the job in the health Centre. I like looking after people. For every time when I saw patients smile to me, I felt so happy and proud of myself. On the other hand, in the two where I live now, a new hospital was built. They request more staff. I qualify for the job, so I want to get it.
The second option is to be a medic. I will work in the oil patch. This job requests several tickets, such as Level Three First Aid, H2S, etc. But the disadvantage is people who work in the oil patch have to stay in the camp for 6-10 days. They can’t go home every day. That is what I don’t agree with. Fortunately, the pay is really good, so this option is on my top list.
The last option actually matches my personal style. I love to wear fancy dress. My few friends always say, “You should work at an office.” Even my mum wants me to work in the office because she was an administrator. She wanted me working in the office. At the time, my family moves with me. I will have time to look after my daughter. However, I still need to upgrade my personal skills. For example, improve my typing skill, my English writing skill, and communication skill. That is the reason why I am studying English in NLC now.
These options are my targets. I want to spend all my available time to upgrade my personal skills, and do as much as I can. I think it doesn’t matter which offer I will get, I will be so happy with that because this will be my other milestone. I try my best even though I might fail all of them. I still wouldn’t be disappointed. I will be working harder. I will give myself and my family a good life.

Japanese Manners
By Yuri Nishitani
When you come to Japan, you should obey the Japanese manner. First of all, greetings are an important thing in Japan. When you begin to eat foods, or finish, you must say some greeting words. If you don’t say these words, it’s impolite. Secondly, Japan has different customs from other countries. You must take off your shoes by the entrance. In most houses in Japan you are not allowed to come in the house with shoes on. Thirdly, there are many rules in Japanese table manners. You mustn’t stick chopsticks into rice and leave them there. It means a death. It’s rude to chew foods noisily. All of these things are very important in Japan.

Variety is the Spice of Life
By Sae Kubota
The expression, “Variety is the spice of life” is usually true. For example, we quarrel with brothers or friends or parents, but our bond can deepen in a quarrel. Then, we sometimes fail at something. But we can know the new things, and we can get something. And then, we can mature in a failure. Then we are in love with someone, and we associate with someone and split up. Those things happen to everyone. So life is good.

Learning by Listening
By Sae Kubota
I learn best by listening to people talk about things. For example, when I was an elementary school student, I joined the volleyball club. Then, my coach taught us the rule and how to do. I learned by listening and do an imitation of the coach. I earnestly listened to the rule. Other example, I learn by listening how to cook by my mother. I sometimes cook with my mother. Then, I listen carefully and cook.

The Influence of Family
By Sae Kubota
I am influenced by family. I think that many young adults are influenced by family. In my case, I tell my family anything. My family is a big part of my life for me, and for young adults. I tell my mother about friends, examinations, school, and so on, and I get some advice. Sometimes, I change my opinions and my ideas by my mother. I think that young adults are influenced by family.

Reading 1, My New Business: An Explanation of the Assignment
By Pamela den Ouden
In our reading text, we read about how businesses use colour psychology. For example, many computer companies, like Dell and IBM, use blue because it gives the idea of dependability. UPS uses brown because brown is seen as a safe, dependable colour.
The assignment was to create a business, tell what the business did, choose colours for the business, and explain the choice of colours. In addition, there was a list of about 20 vocabulary words that students had to try to use as they wrote their description of their businesses.
The next eight articles (below) are the result! I think we were all very creative!

Reading 1, My New Business: A Garage
By Yohannes Feyissa
We would like to advertise. We hope to establish a garage. Our garage name is Peace and Love. This name depends on our company colors. Our company colors are red and white. Red is easy to remember and affects some people in different ways, especially love. White also is easy to remember and to show peace. So our company name represents love and peace. Our company service is to fix all varieties of cars and make a body. When you come in to our garage, we give a courtesy car. We encourage you to buy some shares in our garage, and the shares are almost ended, so be fast!
Before this business, when a car is hurt by anything, the person who wants the car to be fixed waited a long time, mostly more than six months. That’s not good for that person, and we give fast service with pure doing.

Reading 1, My New Business: An Indian Restaurant
By Amandeep Dhillon
I would like to establish an Indian restaurant in Fort St. John. I would give “Zira Indian Restaurant” as the name of that restaurant. I would colour the outside walls of the restaurant brown and sky blue. Brown is a safe and reliable colour, and sky blue is a natural colour and reminds us about environment. I would colour light brown walls with dark boundary. I would give the bright colour to the sign. I would give the red and green colour to the sign because this colour catches everyone’s eyes easily. The staff uniforms would be sky blue. Blue is the colour of the sky, oceans, and lakes, so it makes us think about air, water, and peace. It would affect the people’s feeling. All dishes and napkins would be white. It represents goodness. The floor would be dark brown.
I would serve a variety of Indian food here, so I consider people would enjoy that food here without going to any specific place. I hope it encourages the people to buy or eat food from here. It makes me joyful. I am sure we will give a great service to the people. I consider I will give advertising in newspapers and magazines. It’s a universal fact that people want to eat food from different countries. I mean they like to eat different food. We will provide the food related with Indian culture. I would like to be a dependable owner. We will give a special present for a bride and a groom if somebody is going to have their marriage party in our restaurant. In this way, it will be helpful to change the emotion and psychology of people about our restaurant.

Reading 1, My New Business: A Clothing Store
By Masami Taguchi
I would like to establish a clothing store. The name of my shop is MNMK. This means the initials of my brother and sisters. As you can see, I initiate the shop with my family. In my shop, there are many varieties of stylish clothes, mainly shoes and heels which we gathered from all over the world. My young sister and I gather those, and my older sister and brother start servicing. They also consider and create the advertising. I target specific young women who are interested in fashionable clothes. I would like to use red on advertising because red is my favorite color and has an effect of increasing purchase power. When I look at the advertising every time, I feel positive and motivated. Some clothing stores use red color on advertising, like H & M and Uniclo, which are my favorite clothing shops. In addition, I would like to use white in the store. White is peaceful and pure. When customers enter the store, they feel comfortable, and they consider that this shop is clean. So I want to use red and white.

Reading 1, My New Business: A Supermarket
By Yuri Nishitani
Company name: World Kitchen
Product or service: supermarket
Main colors: green and orange
Reason for choosing these colors: I think green means leaf, natures, and fresh. Orange means sun, nature, and cheerful.
I’m planning to establish a supermarket which is named “World Kitchen.” I’ll explain about the store. First, it has a variety of foods from around the world, so we could provide anything for customers. Customers get a chance to experience different food cultures in their homeland. This supermarket is like a huge refrigerator. We offer as good a service as we can. Secondly, I’d like to use two colors which are green and orange. Green is the color of a leaf, and it might mean “fresh.” Orange is the color of the sun, and it is a kind of cheerful color. I think both of these colors also have a meaning which is “nature.” I could associate these colors with a life. I hope the World Kitchen will be part of your life,k and near to you. In addition, this is the desire of my heartk that the World Kitchen will become a universal company!

For sure, our store environment is good, but I encourage our customers to buy those products on the website, and I want to establish a delivery service. I hope it will bring a convenience for any customers. Their feelings are joyful.

Reading 1, My New Business: Theodore's Bears and Books
By Pamela den Ouden
Theodore’s Bears and Books My dream is to establish a business that sells teddy bears and children’s books. The name of my store is “Theodore’s Bears and Books.” Both books and bears have a universal appeal to children and adults alike. After all, Winnie-the-Pooh and Paddington Bear are part of the culture of childhood. The colours in the store advertising would be navy blue, light blue, and white. The colours are dignified and psychologically have a calming effect. Comfortable chairs covered in soft navy blue fabric with light blue toss cushions would provide a place for customers to relax as they choose their books and bears.
The mascot, Theodore Bear, would wear a navy blue vest over a pale blue shirt. The wording on the advertising sign would be white on navy blue. Customers would be encouraged to browse through the bookshelves and to handle the bears, carefully, of course! The store would have a daily story time, which would give the children something to look forward to and another reason to come into the store. There would be a seating area with tables and chairs. Tea and small sandwiches and cakes would be served daily at 4 p.m. for a modest price. The tablecloths would be navy blue and napkins would be a crisp white. Plates and cups would be pale blue. The environment would be relaxing but elegant.
Tea time and story time will affect traffic in the store in a positive way. Children could stop off on the way home from school to hear a story and have a bite to eat. Parents out shopping could stop by for tea or coffee before heading home. Everyone will have positive feelings and experiences at “Theodore’s Bears and Books.” Even though a business like this represents a lot of hard work, and there is always the danger that it will be crowded out by the big chain book and toy stores, I like to consider that I would be a kind and dependable owner, providing great service and a variety of products. It will truly be a joyful place..
This is a dream of mine that may or may not come true, but dreaming about it makes me joyful. I can dream, can’t I?

Eating Habits in Macau and Canada
By Sam Cheang
There are several differences in the eating habits between Macau and Canada. First, Cantonese like to eat rice every day, but Canadians usually like to eat hamburger or meat for their main part of dinner and have some salad. In contrast, in Macau, they eat dessert after supper. Second, Cantonese like drinking tea when they eat breakfast or supper while Canadians like drinking pop or milk. Third, Cantonese use chopsticks at supper, but Canadians usually use fork and knife. We have different eating habits.

The Causes of Population Increase
By Sam Cheang
The population increases for three main reasons. First, scientists are advanced in medicine every day, so humans' health gets improvement. Second, we are living in a good environment. Third, farmers have improved farming methods that produce more and better food. Finally, above all of the information, the infant death is decreased. Instead, more people can stretch their living longer.

Why I Moved to Macau
By Sam Cheang
I decided to move to Macau for four reasons. I want to find a better job and have a stable income. Other things attracted me to move to Macau because it has a different climate in each season. Most people like to live in a place of safety instead of living in a dangerous environment that has a lot of crimes. In addition, everybody wants a place with a lower cost of living. So do I. For all these reasons, I know Macau is a nice place.

My Class Room
By Yohannes Feyissa
My classroom is medium and the color of the walls is white. There are four windows, two boards and so many tables and chairs. There is a television and projector. The desks are arranged just like small alphabet (n) shape or (u) shape. The teacher sits in front of the students. The door is beside the teacher. I like it because I feel freedom. It depends on the walls’ color and desks’ arrangement, especially the way to teach.

My Favorite Holiday
By Yohannes Feyissa
My favorite holiday is Easter. We celebrate in the middle of April. That day when the celebration day always all businesses are closed except private businesses and places for enjoyment. We celebrate this holiday in peace and love. We also celebrate with street boys and girls, give some food and clothes to a beggar. Our special food is called injera with doro wet. We were in that day if we have! Usually we used traditional clothes. We celebrate with family in church and home. Sometimes we give or receive gifts to each other, especially for the old person in the house like grandfather, grandmother. I like this holiday because I believe in God and his risen Son.

How to Make New Friends
By Asami Kawamura
I want to give some advice about how to make new friends. First of all, it’s important to keep smiling when you talk to a new person. Second, don’t be afraid to talk with new people. When you talk to a new person, you should ask questions as much as you can. Then you should take a positive attitude toward new friends. You don’t have to be afraid of talking to new people.

I Would Rather Live in a Small Town
By Asami Kawamura
I would rather live in a small town than a big city. There are several disadvantages of living in a big city. First of all, the big cities are full of allurements. Second, there is a lot of crime in the big cities. The hustle and bustle of the big city makes me exhausted. Third, life in the big city wears people down. When I lived in a big city, I felt the stress of urban life more than when I lived in a small city. That’s why I’d like to live in a small city.

Book Review: The Barrio Kings
By Masami Koguchi
This book was written by William Kowalski. The main character is named Rosario Gomez. He is 23 years old. He used to be in a gang, but he gave up gang life after his brother was killed in a street fight. After that, he is very busy every day because he goes to night school and works hard at the supermarked to get promoted. In addition, he has a girlfriend, Connie. She is pregnant, so he works hard for them and to spend a happy life with them. But, one day, his old gangbanger buddy shows up seeking revenge. He makes Connie and Rosario fear because he is crazy. He had promised Connie to never do a fight same as the past. One day, his pregnant girl friend, is hit in drive-by shooting. Then Rosario went to his enemy’s house to get revenge of Connie with the gun and old gangbanger. His enemy was name Lencho. He killed Rosario’s brother in street a few days ago. Rosario talked to Lencho. Then he didn’t shoot Connie. In fact, Lencho’s gangbanger shot her without consideration of Lencho. Lencho punched him in the face hard. Then it’s over. After that, Rosario became a manager at the supermarket and graduated night school and had a baby. He lives a happy life with family. I recommend this book because although Rosario used to be in a gang, he work hard to his dream and he loves her so much. The last chapter filled with happiness. When I read this book, I felt good.

Book Review: The Last of the Mohicans
By Masami Koguchi
The title is The Last of the Mohicans. The Mohicans means one of the Indian tribes. This book was written by James Fenimore Cooper. It was made into a movie. It is one of the famous American pieces of literature.
This story took place at Lake Horican on the Hudson River (the author gave this name to Lake George). It is in the east of North America. Today, the area is called New York state. At the time of this story, North America was not independent. North America became independent from Europe in 1787.
This story’s time is 1757. Armies from England and France are fighting in North America. Both countries want the land. The Indian people had lived in the land for thousands of years. They got their food from the land. They hunted deer, bears, and birds in the forests. They ate the meat from these animals and made clothes from animals' skin. In 1607, English people came to North America. The next year, French people came. They took the soft animals’ skins to Europe.
Soon more and more Europeans came. They wanted the Indians’ land. The kings of France and England sent soldiers to North America. The soldiers built strong forts to live in. The soldiers brought guns. The Indians fought for the armies from England and France.
In this story, the Hurons are one of the Indian tribes that are fighting for the French. The Nohawks are fighting for England. This is a story of two daughters of the English and several Indian men. Chingachgook and Uncas were the Mohicans, but Uncas was finally killed by Mugua. He is also Indian, but he snatched the English sisters. Uncas was killed by Mugua to protect her. Her name is Cora. Then, Cora killed herself. Finally, Chingachgook became the last of the Mohicans.
I recommend this book because I could read it easily and it uses clear grammar and vocabulary. I could learn the history of North America. So I want to watch this movie.

My Bedroom Shows My Personality
By Ira King
As you walk into my room, you will see the tidy bed with white cotton sheets and duvet cover at the centre of the room. A neat bed always looks good, and quality, comfort and relaxation are really important for me. There is a dresser with a big mirror on the left side of the bed with many novels on the top. You can tell that I like to read before sleeping. There are fresh flowers on the top of the dresser, expressing how I love freshness and beauty. On the left side of the bed, there is a big walk-in closet. I have organized clothes according to colors and seasons and similar clothes are kept together. This saves my time when getting dressed in the morning.

My School Student Lounge
By Asami Kawamura
My school student lounge is very big, so it is comfortable and quiet. The dark orange walls have an exciting effect on me. There is the vending machine in the left rear corner. The small drink shelf is next to the vending machine. The kitchen is in the middle of the room on the wall. The menu signboard is hung on the right side of the kitchen. There is the small shelf next to the kitchen. There are some free drink pots on the small shelf. There are many fluorescent lights on the ceiling.

E-Readers: A New Trend
By Pamela den Ouden
E-readers are a popular trend with people of all ages. An e-reader is a small electronic screen onto which whole books can be downloaded. E-readers help people connect with classic and contemporary books. People can talk with their friends about the books they read. E-readers are easy to carry and use. They can hold thousands of books at a time. Even elementary school cildren are becoming more interested in reading because of this trend. People are used to getting information from screens, and now they can read books on a screen. I have never tried an e-reader, but I would like to!

The Past Ten Years
By Lin Lin
My life has been changed a lot since 2000. I graduated from my high school in 2000. I didn’t get any good offer for the university. At that time, my mum gave me two opinions to choose: go to college or go abroad. I didn’t even think about it. I told my mum I would love to go abroad. Since then my life has been changed.
In 2001, I packed up my stuff when I was ready to go to my new direction. I didn’t spend too much time to settle into my new life. I went to school, found a job, and met a lot of new friends. At the end of 2003, accidentally, I met my husband. I started to build a family. After we met each other’s parents, I was planning to have a baby. In 2006, lucky me, we had a baby girl. I started to learn what the responsibility means. I needed to look for a job and save some money for my daughter’s future. When I got a job as a clerk in the Chinese clinic, I didn’t have time to look after my baby girl. I had to let her grandparents take care of her. But I promised myself I would bring her back to me in four years.
I worked a year in the Chinese clinic. At that time, I began to feel my knowledge wasn’t good enough. I decided to go to school. I picked up a nursing course. That course was related to my last job. A year after I had done studying, I got a job offer from a nursing home. However, I knew I wanted to bring my baby girl back to me, and I didn’t want to go back to China. I should change my situation: to get PR (Permanent Resident) or citizen in Ireland.
Then my husband and I began to find how we can apply for PR or citizen. We applied but were not successful. People always say: if God closes a door, he opens a window. By chance, I saw a message from a web site. Depending on my skill and my work experience, I could immigrate to Canada. I was so surprised and so excited. But the bad condition is I needed to go to Canada first. After I worked two years, I could bring my family here. I told this information to my husband, and he stood by me to do this thing.
2010 is my second important milestone. I had to leave the country that I had been living in for 10 years and go to another strange country. But whatever, the choice is right or wrong. I could only do it now—just step on it. I packed up my stuff again, said good-bye to my families again. I crossed my fingers to myself. I would bring my daughter back to me as soon as possible. This is my story for my past 10 years.

My Weekend Trip to Another City
By Ira King
Finally spring has sprung. After knowing how much money was left after the winter, I decided to go to Vancouver Island and Victoria for the next long weekend. Lucky me to have Aeroplan points. This helps me to cut down the budget. I will take a flight from Fort St. John to Vancouver. Then I will go to Vancouver Island by ferry, where my father-in-law lives. I planned to stay at my father-in-law’s house for two days. On the second day, I will go to Victoria. I have booked a nice hotel in front of the harbour near downtown. I am sure I will have a fantastic weekend trip!
Finally spring has sprung. After knowing how much money was left after the winter, I decided to go to Vancouver Island and Victoria for the next long weekend. Lucky me to have Aeroplan points. 3D Movies are a Hit!
By Asami Kawamura
The popular trend in technology is 3D movies. 3D movies are a popular trend with people of all age. By 3D movies, we can see a screen in three dimensions. We can share surprise or impression. The difference between a former movie and 3D movies is that an image jumps out of the screen. Even if you didn't see the former movie at the theater, it was able to be enjoyed enough also on television in a house or on a DVD. So more people come to go to a movie theater. Therefore, the profit of movie theaters goes up. This trend spreads by many advertisements, such as television, a newspaper and radio. These days, 3D home television, Blue-ray 3D, a record player, and software are also put on the market. 3D will evolve rapidly.

iPads are a New Trend
By Amandeep Dhillon
An iPad is very popular in these days. First of all, a trend means the thing that is becoming popular. For example, a few years ago, the computer was popular, but now the iPad is very popular. Second, the trend helps the people to connect to and keep in touch with others. For instance, if people have an iPad, then people can text each other and do face time with each other. Next the trend is popular from person to person. If anybody sees the thing that is good and useful, people want to have that thing. In this way, the thing spreads from person to person. Then it influences us to buy the thing. The most important thing is that an iPad is more ompact than a laptop, so you can take it anywhere and put it into your small purse. Finally, most of the functions are the same as a computer’s. In the end, we can say that an iPad is very useful in these days.

iPhones, a Popular Trend
By Yuri Nishitani
The most popular trend of technology is iPhones. Today, many people use iPhones all over the world. I think there are many reasons why the men prefer iPhones to cellphones. For example, if I have an iPhone, I don't have to carry a notebook computer because it can connect to the Internet everywhere. It is more light weight and compact than computers. Also, iPhones are very smart. It comes with a built-in camera, dictionary, music player, and more functions. Many people need a more useful one.

My Autobiography as a Writer
By Pamela den Ouden
My grandmother, who was born in the late 1870s near Ottawa, Ontario, never learned to read or write. Her passport, issued in 1949, was signed by her with an X because, even at the age of 60 or so, she couldn’t even sign her name. It is hard for me to imagine my life without writing because it has played a large part in my life, academically, professionally, and personally.
As a student and life-long learner, I have used writing to fulfill many assignments. One of my fondest memories from high school is a series of writing assignments from my grade ten English teacher. The situation: we were stranded on a deserted island. The assignments: create a map of our island, write a letter to our family, detail instructions for making a shelter, and write a recipe for making some island dish, among others. These assignments were so interesting and engaging that even after all these years, I can still picture the outline map of my island, drawn in pencil in a lined, green Hilroy notebook.
All graduate students know the agony and the ecstacy of writing a thesis or dissertation. There’s the excitement of the research, of adding to the body of knowledge on a particular and usually narrow subject. Then there’s the agony of the writing, the rewriting, the revising, the scrapping of whole chapters, and the almost starting all over. Finally there it is—the finished product, with the stamp of approval from the powers-that-be.
Even now, I’m still writing as a student, having enrolled in a second Master’s program. Taking notes on the computer as I listen to an online lecture and writing essays and exams are once again part of my study routine. At the end of my course work, yes, there will be another thesis.
My professional writing life was a five-year apprenticeship by fire. I was a writer and then editor of a small weekly newspaper. The staff was small, the workload was large, and the days were long. There was pressure to produce interviews, photos, features, news, questions-on-the-street, and editorials. There was always something to write, revise, and polish.
The writing that’s brought me the greatest satisfaction, however, has been my personal writing, which includes writing to others, poetry, and stories. Over the years, I have written hundreds of letters to family and friends. When I travel, I send postcards and e-mail. When I’m home, I send letters and e-mail, birthday cards, and notes of encouragement. In addition, I express myself in poetry, usually building on a single image or incident or remark. The newest kind of writing that I’ve tackled is the short story. It’s a difficult form, but with practice, I’ll improve.
Writing is a precious ability that we should not take for granted. Our thoughts, actions, and decisions can be recorded for our descendants. If, after I’m gone, my grandchildren want to know about my life, all they will have to do is look through my letters, scrapbooks, diaries, and articles. The written record will reveal my life, my art, and my heart.

Book Review - The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
By Mika Hirano
I’m going to introduce about The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. The author is Kate DiCamillo. The main character is Edward. He was a rabbit doll who was made almost entirely of china. His owner was Abilene. She loved Edward and treated him with utmost care, but he didn’t like her somehow. One day, her family and Abilene sailed to London with Edward. On the boat, Abilene and Edward met two boys who were so mean. The boys played with Edward and threw him into the ocean. This is the beginning of the journey of Edward.
He met many people who were kind to him. He loved them and they did ooo, but they couldn’t keep him by some reasons. Edward was so sad when they left from him, but he knew something important for him at every saying good-bye. At the end of the story, he was in a doll shop. He met a girl there who really wanted Edward, and so did Edward. The girl told her mother she wanted him. Edward was very surprised and pleased when he looked at the girl’s mother because her mother was Abilene. She noticed he was Edward, so she bought him. Finally, Edward found his way home.
I recommend this book. This is really interesting, sometimes makes me sad, but this story has a happy ending. I like this.

Why Do We Work?
By Emika Uetake
I love to introduce Japanese jokes, traditions, and advertisements. We have a very famous TV commercial in Japan. An old couple goes on a trip, and they spend a great time using a credit card. On the final day, they look at each other, and remember the life since they were married. Then the narrator says, “These have a special value that money can’t buy. Why don’t you use a Mastercard for things that money can buy?” We work for money because we can’t live without money. However, if we have to work only for money, we don’t have to have a number of job interviews or try to go to a good university unless we are interested in studying. I think this is a controversial topic, but in my opinion, in addition to earning money, we work for people and work gives meaning to our lives.
Before I came to Canada to study English, I wonder how many people have helped me? First, the university informed about this studying abroad, prepared a lot of papers like an admission paper for Northern Lights College, recommended which insurance is good for me and so on. Furthermore, the airlines offered me flights from Japan to Canada, and my parents prepared things that I need, like money. A lot of people helped me, and a lot of people are helping me right now. On the other hand, I had a part-time job when I was a freshman in university. I promoted new products like juice or snacks, and sometimes an event took place for the products. I helped lots of consumers decide which products are good for them and contributed to sales of the company. According to my “decent” dictionary, “work” means to do your best for others. Someone does his or her best while another person supports him or her. In Japanese kanji, we write “human” like this:
It looks like people who support each other. Even if we do just a simple easy work, it becomes a help for someone.
When I talk with my Japanese friends about differences between Canada and Japan, a big difference is always answered first. Basically, after Canadians finish working, they go back home immediately and spend a lot of time with their families. They sometimes take a long vacation and go on a trip. In a word, Canadian’s thoughts are well-balanced. In contrast, Japanese, especially married men, tend to be so intent on work as to neglect their families. They work all day long too, but after that, they usually go to Japanese pubs with co-workers and bosses to promote easier relationships. Consequently, many Japanese workers forget about their families, and when they retire from their job, they become like “empty boxes.” Some retired Japanese men wear suits and ties, and they go out every day even though they don’t need to get on a too-crowded train or work with scolding bosses because they can’t forget the days when they worked at a company. Then we have another problem. While husbands are working, their wives spend a good time alone after they see their children or husbands off. Therefore, after their husband’s retired and stays at home all day long, the wives can’t endure the situation and sometimes they are divorced. The Japanese are known as busy bees, but we have this kind of problem as a cost. However, this is also a good example about why we work. People need us every time while we are working. We are sometimes scolded by bosses, but it is evidence that there is a person who is worried about us. I think we work because working gives meaning to our lives.
We have to sacrifice spending time doing our hobbies or things which we want to do almost every day. However, we can get other things instead of it like new human relations, experiences, appreciation, and so on. These can’t be gained while we spend a long time doing Internet or being idle at home. In a TED speech (ted.com), a man talked about “the golden circle.” It tells that very few people or organizations know why they do what they do. This doesn’t mean to make a profit. A person who knows why people work, besides for money, can enjoy the person’s job. In addition, somehow, we miss simple things easier than complicated things. A very simple, general activity called working gives us lots of emotions or experiences, but when you find the reason why people work, like for people or having a proof that we are living in them, I think your world about working will be changed 180 degrees around.

Book Review - Mr. Bean in Town
By Narumi
I read Mr. Bean in Town. Author is Rowan Atkinson, Richard Curtis, Robin Driscoll and Andrew Clifford.
This is story of how Mr. Bean came across a strange happening. First, he went to restaurant for his birthday alone. Then, he order a steak, but he didn't like it. He didn't want to eat, but he thought that he didn't want people to think that "I'm stupid." So he thought of a good idea but it is not good idea. He tried to hid it in very strange place. For example, into a pan, a violin, woman's bag, and so on.
Next day, he went to the launderette. Then, he lost his trousers. He looked around, and he thought there it is among nearby woman's clothes. So he climbed into the drying machine. Then woman began to put some clothes. And she shut the door.
He shouted through the window in the door. "Help! There's somebody in here."
But she couldn't hear him. Finally, the clothes began to go round and round and Mr. Bean began to go round and round.
This story is very funny!! So I recommend it.

Book Review - A Midsummer Night's Dream and Other Stories
By Yukari
I read A Midsummer Night's Dream and Other Stories. This book was made by David Foulds. Today, I will tell you about Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
This story is about two rich Italian families. One was named Montague, the other Capulet. These two families had been quarreling with each other for a long time. The quarrel was so bad and they never went into each other's houses.
One day, Romeo, the son of Montague, went to Capulet's party. He saw very beautiful lady then he fall in love with her. But she is daughter of Capulet, Juliet. They have difficult problems but they got married. After that, Romeo's friend was killed by Juliet's cousin. Next, Romeo killed Juliet's cousin. He must leave the city. Juliet must marry Count Paris. She doesn't want to marry with Paris. She asked priest for his help and advice.
She drinks what Friar Lawrence gives her. It is dangerous medicine. She looks like dead. Romeo hears that Juliet has died. So, Romeo kills himself. After Juliet wake up. She saw Romeo lying dead at Juliet's side. Juliet kills herself, also.
Friar Lawrence sadly told everyone the whole story. And he told them that if they had ended their quarrel long ago, this terrible thing might not have happened. So at last, the two sad old men turned to one another and promised that they would be friends, and at peace for the rest of their lives.

By Erika
I read Strawberry and the Sensations. The author is Peter Viney. This story is about concert of rock band. Main character name is Cyndi. The concert day, she received paper. On the paper was written, "We must kill her. Stop the show or she dies."
It is very scary. But she did concert. The man who wrote the paper shot a gun on the way. Quickly she threw her microphone at him. There was a screaming noise from the microphone and an explosion. Something hit Cyndi in the face and she fell down. But she has begun to sing again. She is a great person.
This story is so-so.

Book Review - Rich Man, Poor Man
By Maho Moriki
I read Rich Man, Poor Man. The story's main person is old man. The old man is poor man. One day, the postman brought him a letter from his son, Saul. In the letter was written, "I have a job in a factory. The work is very hard. But pay is good. I'm sending you a money order." Money is one hundred pounds.
The next morning he went to change the money order. But he couldn't change his money order. But he met a person. A person's name is Mr. Sheth. Mr. Sheth said, "I hope I can help you. But this money order is not worth one hundred pounds. Give me your money order."
The old man gave it. Mr. Sheth said, "I'm going to change this money order for you. He caught the money, but it was ten poinds. He felt old and poor again. I think he hold the bag. The first part of the story is exciting, but end of the story is boring. I don't recommend.

Opinion - Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
By Mika Hirano
I think driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious crime because it has a cause of many accidents. In my opinion, the people who drank alcohol much the first time should pay a fine of $500 or more. When they did it the second time, they should lose their licence. Do you know one of Japanese proverbs? I'd like to tell you one of them. The one is that it'll happen three times if it happened two times. It means similar to the proverb which is "When it rains, it pours." When people failed in something, they learn something good for them. If they don't find out the one, they would do it again and again.

Book Review: The Woman in Black
By Hozumi Nishi
This book’s title is The Woman in Black. The author is Susan Hill. This story’s main character is Kipps. This story is about this young man, Kipps, who went to a house for his work and met a woman’s ghost in the house.
I like this book because it was easy to understand this book’s story. But I was a little bored because I could guess the end of this story.

Book Review - One-Way Ticket
Sayaka
The title is One-Way Ticket. The author is Jennifer Bassett. There are three short stories in this book. All stories are in the train. I’ll introduce one story. This is the third story. It is the best story in this book.
There is the man. He likes the train. His name is Mr Harris. This is a night train. He saw a man and woman. They are brother and sister. Her brother stole a diamond necklace. She was angry. But he didn’t listen. Suddenly she took a knife and stabbed him. Mr. Harris called a guard quickly. But there was no young man and woman when Mr. Harris came back to the carriage. This is a psychic phenomenon. There were dead 80 years ago. They were ghosts.

The Pressures of Being a Student
By Arisa Shimamoto
There are many many pressures of being a student. It should be different depending on a person, and the number of pressures which stdents have also depends on a person. Someitmes, these pressures impede students from having a good school life by too mmuch worrying about them, but on the other hand, they make students work hard to overcome the prssures. Among a lot of pressures, I think the common pressures are to get high grades, keep a relationship, and think about the future.
Effort is necessary to get high grades. If students don’t have high enough grades, they can’t graduate, and their choices decrease. They hagve to study hard every day as much as they can, so that they won’t be such cases. It needs a really strong decision and mind because they know there are a lot more fun things than studying. It’s very difficult to study instead of doing fun things. In addition, their parents expect them to fulfill their potenieal. Most students think about that and they try to live up to their expectations. Sometimes, it could be a big pressure for students.
Students have to care abou tmnay things if they want to keep a relationship. Nobody can spend school life without relying on somebody else. Having friends is important because friends have a big effect. Depending on who my friends are, my life can change, but making friends is difficult for some people. Especially, it may be hard for people who are not talkative. Of course, friends aren’t the same as me and each person has a different personality and opinions. So sometimes, they may argue, but having a relationship with others means including them. Students have to move beyond such situations. Whether students can ge a good relationship or not depends on how they do. That’s why they must have big pressures while they may not realize it.
To think about the future links how students live their life. They have moch possibility and if they keep trying, their possibility can spread more and more. It’s different time when students find what they want to be or what their dream is. If it can be found early, it’s easy to know what to do for that, but some students who can’t find that have to look for what they want to do in themeantime. Sometimes, student don’t have any choice for their future because of parents. Some parents want thtie children to be the same as themselves or grant their dreams which they couldn’t grant. Students like these are charged with their parents’ expectations and pressures. On the other hand, students who have a dream can know what to do, but it will be hard work. They also have parents’ expectations. Parents devote their time, money and everything for their children. So students have to reward such big cooperation.
Consequently, being a student is work. However, nobody can avoid that. In addition, they get a job, it means starting to have more big pressures. Pressures of being a student many be practice for pressures of their future.

City or Country
By Emika Uetake
If I imagine the view of Tokyo, like Aoyama or Shibuya, which are famous and popular cities in Tokyo, I picture that there are a lot of buildings, shops, stuff, and people. These kinds of cities in Tokyo are lighted up all day, so we call them “a non-sleeping city.” On the other hand, my home town, named Koshigaya, in Saitama prefecture, which takes about 30 or 40 minutes from Tokyo city by train, is totally different from Aoyama or Shibuya. There are some rice firlds, many houses, and a few pedestrians. I think this depends on which city you’re are living in, but I prefer to live in the country because there are three better points than city’s.
When I go to Tokyo to shop, I am tired the moment I arrive there and see the number of pedestrians. It is difficult to walk smoothly like in my home town. I’m always pinched by “pedestrians’ wall” one after another. Until I enter a shop, I am exhausted because I broke lots of the “walls.” Although I go there on weekdays, I have to fight with the “walls,” which were made by rich housewives with free time. In contrast, I never feel tired when I am walking on my home town streets. I pedal my bicycle, seeing green rice fields and old Japanese traditional style houses. This is a way of getting rid of stress for me. Places with few pedestrians makes me calm.
If I lived in a city area, I wouldn’t be able to sleep very well because of the noise and bright lights. It is uncomfortable for many people including me to listen to lots of noise. When the bright lights are added to the noise, I am more annoyed. In a city area, they keep on being until every midnight. A country area like Fort St. John, in which I have been, is very quiet at night. I sometimes catch a sound which is a freight train running, blowing the train whistle. In addition, there are enough lights to keep safe exept some events. These lights do not affect us badly and everyone doesn’t feel uncomfortable. Just a little sound and a few lights which need to keep us safe are better point than a city’s.
I like country areas because they aren’t filled with lots of buildings or products. I think this is the most favorite point. In Japan, basically, there is a big shopping mall like WalMart in each town, so we don’t have to go to the city with spending a long time. Moreover, we no longer need to go to the city to shop. There is a huge number of stores on the Internet. We can even buy a tank. The Internet has everything we want, and sometimes cheaper than a shop that we go out to. The stuff you ordered reaches you soon. Even if the stuff, for example, clothes didn’t fit us, we can change the size or take it back smoothly. This great invention gives people who are living in a country area a comfortable life.
I like to live in a country area due to the three points. Which do you want to live in: places which there are lots of people, lights, and stuff, and these are always shining or places with a few people, quiet and calm?

Poems

Some of the most wonderful
Fort St. John sights
Are the stars in the sky
And the Northern Lights.

I drink coffee every day
the taste is good
One day I was walking
I crashed into wood.

the winter is cold
the weather is dry
I woke up this morning
It makes me die

I always use an e-mail to send it to my friends, my parents and so on. I usually use it every night because I have free times more than other times. It is very useful to use it for me. I write various things. For example, important message and easy message. I think that e-mail is essential for every life.

The Twitter is scary, but I can know many things at once. Also, there is a possibility of communicating with my favorite people because they sometimes reply to message which is sent by their fans.
I use Mixi very well. It is many thing to do. For example, we can write diary, play game, tak part in various communities, and send short message. I think that it is very famous among young people. We know about our feelings or our condition with each other.

What is Boxing for Me
By Takashi
First, I began boxing when I was 17 years old. It’s so recently. The opportunity why I began boxing is my father who was a champion in West Japan. One day, I cleaned my house and found a dusty box. In the box, there are a few newspapers, trophies, and awards. And the newspapers said “The new champion was born! Taka Asuka.” So I began boxing and was taught boxing by my father.
