San Andrés Providencia y Santa Catalina

By Viviana Rodriguez

Colors have different meanings.

For example, in China red is the color of prosperity and joy. Red also symbolizes passionate love.

Yellow means joy and happiness. Yellow is full of creative and intellectual energy as well.

A pure blue is the color of inspiration, sincerity and spirituality.

Blue is also a calming color. This is a perfect description of the sensation you get when you look at the sea, specially the sea of San Andres Providencia y Santa Catalina.

San Andres is the largest department in Colombia. It is group of three island located in southwestern Caribbean Sea. It was declared by UNESCO as a biosphere and sea flower reserve in 2000 because of its biological richness, natural characteristics and native traditions. It also has more than 85 coral species, both hard and soft corals; more than 40 beaches, some of them almost virgin and most of them with white coral sand; more than 270 species of fishes, and four different species of turtles. Those are just some of the wonderful natural things you can find there.

There are some other touristic places you can visit, such as Johnny Cay, which is a small “island” approximately 1 km away from the main city. That’s a nice experience from the moment you get into the boat to get there. Once you are there you can enjoy the beach and its peace and of course the exotic food you can taste in the restaurants.

You can also go and visit the geyser located at the south side of the San Andres Island. It is a natural phenomenon that has been carved by the waves into the rocks for centuries until it was 30 meters long. It works as a “fireplace,” where the ocean waves make amazing and huge jets.

The aquarium is actually a natural aquarium that you can see and “feel.”

Visit Morgan’s cave, a place rich in limestone that makes stalactites and the water in there keeps the same level as the sea. You can also visit Johnny Cay beach, La Piscinita, Haynes Cay, the Big Pond Lake and more. And don’t worry about the weather. The temperature is between 26 and 28 degrees most of the time.

San Andrés Providencia y Santa Catalina is just a little “paradise” where you cannot only rest but also enjoy the small pleasures of life.

  1. Hi,
Thanks for this great article. Did you know that Santa Catalina was the focus of a song from the 1950s? It was very popular on the hit parade.

Below are the words to the song about Santa Catalina. Here also is a link to You Tube so you can hear the song. It is performed by a group called the Four Preps, and was a top hit in about 1957.

    Twenty-six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance
    Romance, romance, romance

    Water all around it everywhere
Tropical trees and the salty air
But for me the thing that's a-waitin' there, romance

It seems so distant, twenty-six miles away
    Restin' in the water serene
I'd work for anyone, even the Navy
Who would float me to my island dream

Twenty-six miles, so near yet far
I'd swim with just some water-wings and my guitar
    I could leave the wings
But I'll need the guitar for romance
    Romance, romance, romance

    Twenty-six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance

A tropical heaven out in the ocean
    Covered with trees and girls
If I have to swim, I'll do it forever
'Til I'm gazin' on those island pearls

Forty kilometers in a leaky old boat
Any old thing that'll stay afloat
When we arrive we'll all promote romance
    Romance, romance, romance

    Twenty-six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me
    Santa Catalina
    The island of romance
    Romance, romance, romance

    Twenty-six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin' for me
