A Trip to Muncho Lake
By Tanja Stoll
Every year we travel at least for a long weekend to Muncho Lake. This time, I really like to be able to see the lake as long there is plenty of snow and ice.
That would mean to travel up there in the spring break would be a good idea. A week should be long enough. I could stay there for much longer, but Niclas will be bored after a week.
Usually we just drive to Muncho Lake, having plenty of little breaks and enjoy the way as much as the stay. Sometimes we load our old camper on the back of the truck and take the dogs with us. But not always. Like sometimes before, this time we will rent one of the little cabins right at the lake. They are a little more expensive, but much more comfortable. And the dogs will stay with the house sitter and the horses. So, we will have a “real” time off.
But I’m going to miss them. When we go with the camper, Niclas and I wake up early in the morning and walk with the dogs around for hours. We are never getting tired of this. Well, maybe not “never.” But staying at the lodge can be great fun too. We still get up early, letting Dad sleep and exploring the lake and mountains, watching the little airplanes starting and landing on the lake. After breakfast we drive up the highway to the Liard Hot Springs and soak ourselves in there until we are almost “tender.” Most of the time we see the wild buffalo, and of course, other wildlife. But the buffalo are our favourites. I remember the first time I got so scared by those huge creatures. They just walked on and beside the road, sniffing our truck and looked us right into the eye. Now I’m much calmer, but still have the greatest respect when the buffalo are coming closer. I just hope we will see them again this year.
Muncho Lake and the Hot Springs are our favorite “close” place to go.
