Magical Forest Adventure

By Jessica Shiga

We went to the community forest on October 7, Tuesday. The forest is very nice.

I step into the forest; it looks like another world. A lot of trees grow thickly. They have the look of changing for winter. There are a lot of yellow leaves and pine cones and twigs. Overlapping, they can seem just like a carpet. The gradations of colour from the sky to my step were very beautiful .

In addition, I heard various sounds. For example, everybody’s voices and laughter and birdsong and a small stream. Moreover, I saw woman jogger with a dog and a person taking a dog for a walk.

I can’t see the whole panorama but that’s the point. That’s the very thing that is the real thrill of adventure.

The community forest become "Magical Forest" to me.

Engraved in my Heart and Mind: The Satisfaction of First Time Experiences

By Viviana Rodriguez

“We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.”

(T.S. ELIOT)

Colombia, the country where I was born and didn’t leave for more than 60 days is one of the best places on earth for me. It offers hundreds of different activities to do and places to go. Unfortunately, the pressures of daily life and probably the inescapable routine most of the time didn’t let me enjoy those wonderful “gifts.” Growing up and starting to make my own way in life is already enough work for me, so the time I used to have to try new things is reducing day by day. Now that I am far away from home, I’ve been missing and thinking about millions of things I could have done down there. On the other hand, being out of my country is already an experience and a “gift” that life has giving to me. Being able to know a different culture, language, people, and customs is, for sure, one of the stories and experiences I will tell to my grandchildren. Living in Canada has been an exciting and challenging experience in my life, but is also giving me opportunities and an amazing feeling of satisfaction that first time experiences can give.

A perfect weather and a calm river set an amazing scene for my first canoe riding experience. It was around 5:30 in the afternoon and it was one of the best days you can get in summer season. We were at Moberly Lake, in a dream-like place with a lovely house kind of hiding between the bright green trees in July. The place just seems out of a children’s story, so comfortable, cosy and beautiful. I felt so happy, full of energy and hungry for knowledge, with every emotion inspired by that place and wonderful company. Actually, that day we had been talking about canoes because we met a group of voyageurs from Quebec who were following the same route as Alexander Mackenzie. They were carrying a really heavy canoe made out of birch bark, which they would ride at some point through the Peace River. So, my mind was already thinking about canoes and how it would feel to be into one of those.

I wasn’t expecting to ride a canoe that day, but it was certainly one of the most peaceful and relaxing experiences and surprises in my life. I remember I was the first one saying, “I want to try,” when my friend just asked if somebody wanted to go for a ride; so, I got a lifejacket on, which, in fact, reminded me of my country because it had the same colors that are in my country’s flag. We pulled out the canoe, which wasn’t as heavy as the one the voyageurs were carrying, and I got into it with some extra help. There was enough room for about four people but we took turns in pairs, so it was just my friend and I. I got the nicer place in the canoe, right in the front; thus, I had the best view. In fact, because I had this place, it gave me the inexpressible feeling of moving on top of the water without touching it. Touching the water without feeling it, that was mind-blowing.

Another staggering thing was the landscape around us; it was just a perfect complement for the experience. I used to think that those peaceful and perfect places that Hollywood movies showed and only famous actors “enjoy,” are just fake and temporary paradises, but actually they are real and even better. A subtle breeze somewhat cleaned my mind up and let the moment registered in my memories. The trees made a lovely and sonorous sound that I will never forget. Those 15 or so minutes were the most fabulous moments I’ve ever spent on a lake, even on the ocean. There couldn’t be a better first time experience in a canoe than that one. I remember wanting to stay there for the rest of the day.

The first time I “traveled” in a train wasn’t in an ordinary train. It was such a fantastic drive through the old days. It took place in the Heritage Park in Calgary, Alberta, a stunning place where I really felt as if I were walking in a village back in the old days. The “inhabitants” of the village were ordinary people who really deserve an Oscar. They really made me feel as if I were in the 1800s, from the moment I entered the park and during the whole time I was there.

Many times back home, I planned to go on a train ride, but as I said before, the occupations of daily life kept me so busy that I didn’t have the chance to do it. Nowadays, I think it was better not to have the experience back then. A first time experience should be as memorable and magic as it was in Calgary. The experience in the train was preceded by a nice talk with a group of ladies who told us about their duty on that day, a harmonious piano melody at the church and the most delicious butter tart I’ve ever had.

The train conductors were such kind, gentle and knowledgeable men who loved their job. They also had the patience to answer all kinds of questions tourists like me usually ask. They explained to me how the train schedule worked back in those days, how long it took from city to city and how important this kind of transportation system was and how it changed history.

Meanwhile, I was also joyful watching the passengers, who were a group of beautiful and full of life girls from a summer camp. They all wore a kind of a white uniform that made them look so lovely and innocent. That scene put me right back in the past. The train was a magnificent, imposing and functional machine from the 1800s. It was so pleasing to be sitting in one of the most useful devices accompanied by such a peculiar passengers and crew, who made me notice and appreciate the importance of that wonderful engine.

My final “first-time” experience was my first English concert. It was so unlike what I thought it would be. I’ve been to some concerts in my life: Juanes’ concert, Carlos Vives’ concert, and La Oreja de Van Gogh’ concert, but all of them were Spanish concerts. Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings was the first English band concert I have attended. It was on September 20 and it was an unexpected plan. A friend of mine called me and asked me if I had any plan for that night. She picked me up and we drove to Dawson Creek, BC. To be honest, I didn’t recognize any of the names of the performers and I was wondering how it would be.

.My past experiences in concerts were a little rambunctious and not so calm or organized as I remember. I must admit, I thought it would be more rowdy because it was a rock music concert. I was very surprised when I entered the EnCana Events Centre and saw all those chairs perfectly numbered and organized. Very different from what I experienced before in the Spanish concerts, when you had to stand up between three and six hours to get a little closer to the singer. During the show, in the concerts I’ve attended, people usually jump, scream, and sometimes cry, but in this concert, I was amazed by the people listening and singing in a way you can tell for sure they were caring about and enjoying the music. This was music from the 60’s so maybe that will make some difference, but for sure it was real music.

I was so happy when I recognized one of the songs they were playing but even more excited when my friend told me that it was the original song and its authors. It was “American Woman” song. I’ve hear that song before, from the Lenny Kravitz version, but now, when I’ve heard the original one, I think it sounds much better in Randy Bachman's and Burton Cummings' voices. The more the time passed, the more excited the crowd got, the same as the singers. I enjoyed so much watching the audience closing their eyes and singing the songs with such a deep passion that I could easily guess what a great time they had in their youth and therefore what a happy memories the music brought to their minds. I am sure that was real and pure music. I felt touched by those musicians and the audience so much so that, by the time we had to go, I was one of the people who asked for one more song. I was amazed, surprised and astonished in that concert. Not just for the well done spectacle that the rock stars gave, but also for the impressive behaviour from the audience who, in my opinion, really knew how to enjoy good music.

First time experiences are not always the best experiences a person can get from any activity or situation. Sometimes the first experience of something new can be so frustrating that it might leave disagreeable memories or even fears that could take people apart from nicer moments. Fortunately, that is not my case, at least not in Canada. I love my country, Colombia, and of course there are many wonderful memories of first time experiences there too, but Canada is also becoming a country that is giving me lots of remarkable experiences that will be engraved in my mind and my heart for ever.

Volunteering at Flavours of the World

By Chiharu

The Flavours of the World was held at the Fort St. John Cultural Centre on Saturday, October 4th. This festival is the fundraiser for Central Cchool in Fort St. John. We had rainy weather, but around 350 people came and enjoyed this festival. Most of the ESL students also came and were having fun together. They served a lot of food from different countries: Russia, Italy, Vietnam, Britain, Japan and so on.

Proudly, Yu Ihara, who is a good piano player and one of my classmates, played piano at the ceremony. Unfortunately, I missed his playing, but everybody enjoyed his performance, and he got a lot of applause.

As for me, I was involved in the festival as a volunteer. Three or two weeks before the festival, one of my teachers, Pamela, asked me, “If you are interested in volunteering, would you like to work at the festival?” When I heard the offer, I was afraid of joining as a volunteer because I don’t have enough English ability, especially speaking. In addition, I’m not brave. But I’m interested in volunteer work, so I decided to dare to try.

My volunteer work was serving drinks at the café with Viviana, who is also one of the ESL students, Pamela, Diana, who is Pamela’s daughter, and some Canadians. First of all, Viviana taught me how to make each drink. We had at least 15 kinds of drinks, so it was difficult to memorize all of their names and how to make them. However, she gave me explicit instructions, so I wasn’t confused during my work. After the ceremony, a lot of people came and bought some drinks. There was nothing we could do but make drinks. It was a hard time but it was really a good experience for me. At the end of the festival, we could eat the leftovers. Even if it was leftovers, the taste was awesome! I like Japanese food anyway.

At this festival, I really enjoyed working, eating, and helping. If there is another opportunity to volunteer, I’m sure I’ll join in it and enjoy being a volunteer. And also, if you could have an opportunity to do something which can help people, I recommend joining in and having some experience.

Keira Knightley's Life

By Jessica Shiga

Her name is Keira Christina Knightley. She was born in Teddington, Greater London, England, on March 26, 1985.

She lived most of her life in Richmond, attending Teddingon School and Esher College. She has dyslexia but nevertheless was successful in school and so permitted to acquire a talent agent and pursue an acting career. She got one when she turned six, from her mother as a reward for studying hard. She has noted that she was “single-minded about acting” during her childhood.

Her breakthrough role was in the football-themed film, “Bend it like Beckham” in 2002. After this raised her profile, she was cast in the big budget action film, “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Lots of people began to know her very well. She showed acting ability equal to other actors.

I think she drows people with her acting so I think she is fascinating.

Have a Good Time in the Forest!

By Hsin Ju

Yesterday was a pretty good warm day. It was so good that we can’t waste our time. So after the first class, my teacher decided to take us for a walk into the forest. I was so excited because I didn’t have many chances to walk in the forest. I expected that I will find a lot of beautiful sights. Below is a photo I took.

My first impression was that different colorful leaves, such as green, yellow, red, or brown, spread the path of the forest. When a gust of wind blew those leaves, they were dancing in the wind. The sight was so wonderful and touched my heart. The sky of autumn was so azure blue and clean that I felt peaceful. The atmosphere of the forest was so fresh and full of nature that I felt comfortable. My classmates and I were talking to each other and walking side by side. We were happy and pleased with ourselves.

Suddenly, we found a small cute squirrel on the tree. We were very excited to see it. And then, everyone tried to take a good picture of it. It was the first time that I saw a squirrel so close to me! At this point, I felt that I was so lucky to see it.

Finally, I chose a yellow leaf , a red leaf, and two pine cones as a memory of this adventure. I was glad that I had good time in forest.

An Unforgettable Trip

By Alex

We went to the community forest with my class recently. First, the forest made a strong impression on my mind. It was full of trees. We can see the different color leaves, yellow, green, red ...they looked like a painting. Then we entered the forest. The sound of the birds, wind, and the leaves that we stepped on went around us. It also included the voices of my friends. Most of them were talking about the beautiful landscape. Step by step, we went to the deep of the forest. Suddenly, many classmates took out their cameras and faced a tree. They discovered a squirrel! We all focused on it and all our faces showed the smile. At that moment, I looked at the road. The path was full of yellow leaves. It looked like the Yellow River (China's second longest river). After a while, we began to collect some special leaves and seeds. I thought they were the most valuable souvenir for us. Finally, thanks to Pamela and my classmates for giving me an unforgettable trip.

No Bears or Moose Today!

By Miyuke Wakabayashi

I went to the forest in writing class. I could enjoy walking in forest. First of all, I could see a view there. I saw squirrel on the branch. I have never seen it before, so I was very happy. Second, leaves are almost all yellow. They were so beautiful. And, it was very fine day because sky was very clear. I could enjoy nice colors. They also made me happy. In addition, I have one thing I could not enjoy there. Fallen leaves had a bad smell. My friend said, these smell like bananas!! I did not think so. I thought they smelled like decayed food. Finally, I was scared about bears. I did not want to meet wild animals like moose and bears. I do not want to die. Fortunately, I did not meet them. I could enjoy walking in forest. I would like to go there again before it is getting cold.

A Short Walk in the Woods

By Andrea Ortiz

I was in forest recently and all things were very amazing. First of all, I observed various leaves, of sizes, shapes and colours. For example, when I was walking to the forest the way was covered with many yellow leaves. It was for me very special because I never saw this in Colombia.

Also, I saw a beautiful small squirrel, but the squirrel was afraid because we took many photos and it was different for small squirrel. I am not sure at the moment, but squirrel ate something. Next I saw different trees. I don’t remember the names of any.

During this short walk, I heard birds, but it was difficult because people talked all the time. Also I heard wind. This sound was subtle and nice. Another thing, when I was walking over leaves, I heard crunching leaves. Eventually Theo took some photos. These were very funny. For example, one photo was with logs (“ja ja ja”). I sat on logs and my face was bored. Another photo was of trees.

Finally, when I came to the classroom again, I was very tired but I was happy for that great short walk.

Playing Soccer

By Rain

On Sept.30, Ali organized almost all the ESL students to play soccer. That day was a nice day and with a lot of sunshine. Almost all B class students went to the NLC playground after grammar lesson. And the other class must came after they finished their lesson. So B class students played soccer first. Actually, we didn't have too many people who knew how to play soccer, especially me and Andrea. But Ali said he was a PE teacher in France. And he also did his best to teach us how to play soccer. As you can see, we all enjoyed playing soccer. We exclaimed when we scored.

One thing I was surprised at is that Monika was a good soccer player. She can control the ball very smoothly. Finally, we felt tired after we finished playing soccer. As far as I know, they all went to bed early! The next day, Andre and Ken both told me that they their legs were very painful. So I think that they must do warm up first. I was look forward to the next activity.

Below, from the left, back row: Monika, Ken, Alex, Ben; centre: Alex (with the ball), Yu.

A Magic Moment in the Forest

By Ali Belhis

To walk in the forest is a great time. At first, before we entered into the forest, we could see marvelous natural colors: every tree's leaves are colored; it was as nice as looking at a rainbow. After that we entered, and this million of leaves seemed to accompany us and even to escort us all along the way. After, we suddenly saw a squirrel. It stayed on a branch of a tree and it seemed to look at our group, like a surveyor. All this time, the environment became mysterious because all the students were silent and we could only hear the characteristic noises of the forest.

Last but not least, I was impressed by the musical sounds of the forest, like the wind that blew in the leaves and in the branches. For instance, we could hear the sounds of the leaves under our feet. However, our walk's charm was broken by modern sounds, when some students began once more to joke. I would have liked to meet a moose, but I could only imagine a picture with one of them and to hear it call.

In addition, I was impressed by the smells all around us. I expected to smell nice scents. However, it was the contrary, like dying leaves or old wood. These stange smells were released everywhere and it was as if we were in an unreal environment. I thought that in the future, modern pionners could live in a similar situation on a new planet. I was really focused on that.

Finally, I picked a little branch with colored leaves, and we came back. I think that, for example, Aristote taught in similar environment, at his time.

In conclusion, pedagogic staff could think of revolutionary ways to teach. Teachers primarily try to avoid boring their students in courses. They could alter their plan and perhaps substitute the rooms with natural environment like a cave or a forest.
